Die Jazzsängerin und Komponistin Defne Şahin hat eine musikalische Sprache entwickelt, die ihr Leben in verschiedenen Ländern widerspiegelt. In Berlin geboren, lebte die junge Musikerin bereits in New York, Istanbul und Barcelona.

Ihr aktuelles Album Hope, produziert von Basslegende Greg Cohen produziert, nahm sie mit ihrer langjährigen Berliner Band bestehend aus Johannes von Ballestrem, Keisuke Matsuno, Simon Jermyn und Martin Krümmling auf. Die Texte des Albums sind Defnes eigene und Bearbeitungen der Lyrik der amerikanischen Dichterin Emily Dickinson. Herausgekommen ist eine berührende Auseinandersetzung mit den Dichotomien Leben und Tod, Liebe und Sehnsucht, Angst und Hoffnung sowie dem Loslassen von all diesem. Das Album entstand im Rahmen einer virtuellen Residenz des Goethe-Instituts unter anderem unter der Ägide von Defnes Mentorin Becca Stevens, einer der wohl bedeutendsten Sängerinnen unserer Zeit.
Defne Sahin studierte unter anderem am Jazz-Institut Berlin und an der Manhattan School of Music bei renommierten DozentInnen wie Dave Liebman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Judy Niemack oder Gretchen Parlato. Sie trat in ihrer beeindruckenden Karriere schon international auf Festivals und in bedeutenden Häusern wie der legendären Carnegie Hall auf.

Ihre Begleitband besteht aus vier fantastischen Instrumentalisten:

Charis Karantzas ist ein versierter Gitarrist, der in Berlin, Deutschland, lebt. Erste Erfolge feierte er als Gitarrist in seinen Studienjahren in Amsterdam, bevor er nach Berlin kam, um am Jazz-Institut weiter an seinen Fähigkeiten zu feilen. Er tourt regelmäßig durch ganz Europa als Mitglied vieler kommerzieller, unabhängiger und Jazz-Acts. Er arbeitet regelmäßig im Studio als Studiomusiker und als Produzent und Mischer. Seine Spezialitäten sind Rock, Pop und Jazz.

Povel Widestrand ist ein in Berlin lebender schwedischer Pianist. Nach einer klassischen Grundausbildung studierte auch er am Jazz-Institut und schloss sein Studium mit Bestnote ab. Als Mitglied verschiedener Bands wurde er mit seinen gerade einmal 30 Jahren mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichet, wie dem Nachwuchspreis der europöischen Jazzwoche Burghausen und dem Newcomer-Award von Sveriges Radio.

Simon Jermyn ist Gitarrist, E-Bassist, Komponist und Pädagoge. Der ursprünglich aus Irland stammende Musiker lebt in NYC/Berlin. Simon Jermyn ist mit einer Vielzahl von Projekten und Bands beschäftigt, darunter Jim Black's Smash and Grab, Wood River, das Marc Hannaford Trio, Roamer und Sooner, sowie mit seiner eigenen Band Obsany und Soloauftritten. Als Sideman und Kollaborateur hat Simon mit Jim Black, Chris Speed, John Zorn, Gerald Cleaver, Mat Maneri, Anna Webber, Tom Rainey, Chris Lightcap, Ingrid Laubrock, Mark Ferber, Michaël Attias, Tony Malaby, Ben Goldberg, Jeff Davis, Allison Miller, Nate Wood, Simon Nabatov, Loren Stillman, Satoshi Takeishi, Caleb Burhans und vielen anderen gearbeitet. Er ist im Village Vanguard, The Stone, Winter Jazz Fest, Joe's Pub und vielen anderen Clubs, Festivals und Veranstaltungsorten auf der ganzen Welt aufgetreten.

Martin Krümmling ist ein junger Schlagzeuger und Komponist, der mit seiner offenen Klangästhetik und seinem vielschichtigen und unverwechselbaren Sound überzeugt. Er ist Halbfinalist der renommierten Monk Competition 2012. Er hat bereits mit Jazzgrößen wie Ed Partyka, Lage Lund, Jason Moran, Dan Tepfer, David Friedman, Maucha Adnet und Bill Dobbins gespielt und ist mit ihnen aufgetreten.

Jazz singer and composer Defne Şahin has developed a musical language that reflects her life in different countries. Born in Berlin, the young musician has already lived in New York, Istanbul and Barcelona.

She recorded her latest album Hope, produced by bass legend Greg Cohen, with her longtime Berlin band consisting of Johannes von Ballestrem, Keisuke Matsuno, Simon Jermyn and Martin Krümmling. The album's lyrics are Defne's own and adaptations of poetry by American poet Emily Dickinson. The result is a touching exploration of the dichotomies of life and death, love and longing, fear and hope, and the letting go of it all. The album was created as part of a virtual residency of the Goethe-Institut under the aegis of Defne's mentor Becca Stevens, one of the most important singers of our time.Defne Sahin studied at the Jazz Institute Berlin and at the Manhattan School of Music with renowned teachers such as Dave Liebman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Judy Niemack and Gretchen Parlato. She has performed internationally at festivals and major venues such as the legendary Carnegie Hall during her impressive career.

Charis Karantzas is an accomplished guitarist based in Berlin, Germany. He had his first successes as a guitarist during his student years in Amsterdam before coming to Berlin to further hone his skills at the Jazz Institute. He tours regularly throughout Europe as a member of many commercial, independent and jazz acts. He works regularly in the studio as a studio musician and as a producer and mixer. His specialties are rock, pop and jazz.

Povel Widestrand is a Swedish pianist living in Berlin. After a basic classical education, he also studied at the Jazz Institute and graduated with top grades. As a member of various bands, he has been awarded numerous prizes at just 30 years of age, such as the young talent award of the European Jazz Week Burghausen and the Newcomer Award of Sveriges Radio.

Simon Jermyn is a guitarist, electric bassist, composer and educator. Originally from Ireland, he lives in NYC/Berlin. Simon Jermyn is involved with a variety of projects and bands including Jim Black's Smash and Grab, Wood River, the Marc Hannaford Trio, Roamer, and Sooner, as well as his own band Obsany and solo performances. As a sideman and collaborator, Simon has worked with Jim Black, Chris Speed, John Zorn, Gerald Cleaver, Mat Maneri, Anna Webber, Tom Rainey, Chris Lightcap, Ingrid Laubrock, Mark Ferber, Michaël Attias, Tony Malaby, Ben Goldberg, Jeff Davis, Allison Miller, Nate Wood, Simon Nabatov, Loren Stillman, Satoshi Takeishi, Caleb Burhans and many others. He has performed at the Village Vanguard, The Stone, Winter Jazz Fest, Joe's Pub and many other clubs, festivals and venues around the world.

Martin Krümmling is a young drummer and composer who convinces with his open sound aesthetics and his multilayered and distinctive sound. A semi-finalist in the prestigious 2012 Monk Competition, he has played and performed with jazz greats such as Ed Partyka, Lage Lund, Jason Moran, Dan Tepfer, David Friedman, Maucha Adnet and Bill Dobbins.
