The Zig Zag is proud to announce a brand new and fresh Sunday concert series that showcases a community of jazz artists responsible for bringing about an explosion of energy and life into the Berlin jazz scene. The series will feature some of the most in demand, highly skilled and exciting young jazz talents in the scene today. Going against the trend of complexity, abstraction and the “academization” of the arts, these young masters have taken the jazz scene by surprise by packing in the clubs and bringing back to life a love and passion for hard swinging music. Performances are completely acoustic with little to no amplification. Subtle interaction, melodic focus and soulful virtuosity is at play here. If you’re interested in listening to some of the finest swinging sounds of jazz this is not an event to miss out on.
Dima Bondarev
Born in 1984 in Ukraine, Bondarev began playing the trumpet at the age of nine and has been based in Berlin since 2013. He has already made a name for himself as one of the most respected up and coming young musicians in Germany where he undertook both Batchelor and Master studies at the Jazz Institut Berlin (JIB). He has been collaborating with many outstanding musicians in the European and American jazz scene, among them - Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, NDR Big Band, Jim Black, Nels Cline, Steve Turre, Conrad Herwig and many others.
Johannes von Ballestrem ist ein deutscher Jazzpianist und lebt in Berlin. Er ist sowohl im traditionellen als auch im modernen Jazz zuhause. Aufgrund dieser stilistischen Vielseitigkeit arbeitet er in unterschiedlichsten Bands und gibt regelmäßig Konzerte in Deutschland und weltweit. Dabei stand bereits auf der Bühne mit Jazzgrößen wie Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen, Norma Winstone, Eric Harland, Kurt Elling, Jim Black und Till Brönner. 2011-2013 nahm er mit dem Bundesjazzorchester mehrere CDs auf und unternahm Tourneen in ganz Europa und Afrika. 2014 eröffnete er die Deutsche Kulturwoche in Benin (Westafrika) mit einem Solokonzert und spielte dort Konzerte mit beninischen Musikern. Ein Forschungsstipendium des Berliner Senats brachte von Ballestrem 2016 für 6 Wochen nach New Orleans. Dort beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit den Wurzeln und den frühen Spielarten des Jazz. In den letzten Jahren rückte durch die Zusammenarbeit mit der Flötistin Mariana Zwarg als weiterer Schwerpunkt brasilianischer Jazz in den Fokus. Daraus ergaben sich bisher Kollaborationen mit wichtigen Vertretern der brasilianischen Musikszene, z.B. Hermeto Pascoal, Itiberê Zwarg und Fabio Gouvea. Johannes von Ballestrem studierte am Jazz Institut Berlin und an der HMT Leipzig, zu seinen Lehrern zählten Michael Wollny, Kurt Rosenwinkel und Wolfgang Köhler. Seit 2016 hat er einen Lehrauftrag am Jazz Institut Berlin.
Paul Santner was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1992. That’s where he started to sing, play the trumpet, the piano and football from a young age. He picked up the doublebass, the guitar and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu later. He moved to Berlin in 2011 to study music with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen and others. He played and plays with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Sun Dew, 1000 gram, Jim Black, Stefano Bollani and many more.
Jordan Dinsdale As a young British drummer based in Berlin, Jordan has studied and played with some of the greatest names in Jazz including Jimmy Cobb, Chris Cheek, Jimmy Wormworth, Mike Kanan and Yasushi Nakamura. Studying at Leeds college of Music on a scholarship (2010-2017), he graduated with a first class honours and was awarded the CBE Peter Roberts Memorial prize for achieving the highest marked recital performance. In January 2017, Jordan returned to New York to study with some of the masters including Jimmy Cobb, Johnathan Blake, Ari Hoenig and Eric McPherson.

ENTRANCE FEES
One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
EINTRITT
Einer der Gründe, die den Zig Zag Jazzclub so einzigartig machen, ist, dass er der erste und einzige Jazzclub der Welt ist, dem es gelingt nur durch freiwilligem Eintritt/Crowdfunding Events von Weltklasse zu finanzieren. Und wie machen wir das? Ganz einfach. Während der Konzertpause geben wir bekannt, dass wir Geld einsammeln werden. Bei den meisten Konzerten (außer Jam Sessions) informieren wir unsere Kunden, dass ein Beitrag von ungefähr 15 Euro es uns erlaubt die Musiker gerecht zu bezahlen. Manche geben dabei mehr und andere weniger... und das ist auch in Ordnung. Wir haben auf diese Weise schon Hunderte Konzerte organisiert.
