Virtuoso, energetic, enthusiastic: the compositions of the Indian-Swiss violinist Baiju Bhatt are drenched in rhythmical finesse and melodious runs that go straight to the ears. Supported by his band, « Red Sun », the performer from the Romandie skillfully interweaves influences from jazz, world and rock and thus creates his very own sound somewhere between the orient and the occident. The band’s new album, « Eastern Sonata », is released on the Berlin label QFTF, and features some of the most prominent artists in the contemporary Jazz/World fusion scene (such as Nguyên Lê, Prabhu Edouard, Amine Mraihi, Krishna M. Bhatt among others).

“Baiju Bhatt comes straight to the point and delivers an album with charged virtuosity, non-stop energy and unlimited playfulness. Red Sunsimply does not let go of the gas pedal.” - UK Vibe
“Eastern Sonata”, an accomplished musical work, surprisingly fresh, with balanced sounds between tradition and modernity.” - Couleurs Jazz
”Everything on Eastern Sonata moves in harmony. Not just a musical harmony, but a human, cooperative one. Where different cultures come together instead of warring. And as more footprints scuff those borders, reshaping this world into the one in Eastern Sonata's music, it will become imperative that we listen to the fruits of such harmony. To keep the melting pot stirred.” - All About Jazz
Baiju Bhatt (1988) picked up the violin at the age of six, and studied Western classical music at the Lausanne Conservatory (Switzerland) until his early twenties. He discovered jazz by playing piano as a kid, and soon started to play swing and other forms of jazz with his violin. He later studied with jazz violinist Pierre Blanchard, and he joined in 2009 the professional course of the Conservatory (HEMU) in Lausanne, thus becoming the first violinist to ever complete a Master's degree in Switzerland. Always eager to discover new musical horizons, Baiju Bhatt has also studied with famous jazz violinists such as Didier Lockwood and Jean Luc Ponty, and with Indian, Celtic, Eastern European and Oriental musicians. Baiju created in 2011 the Red Moon Collective, an international project combining jazz, rock, folk and traditional music from India and elsewhere (awarded by the HEMU as one of the "Best Swiss Bachelor projects"). In addition to his concerts with Gypsy swing bands in Switzerland and Paris (Gypsy Jazz Sessions in Cully Jazz Festival, Gypsy Galaxy, Tcha-Badjo, etc.), Baiju Bhatt tours the world since 2010 with the virtuoso Tunisian brothers Amine & Hamza - The Band Beyond Borders, as a featured artist, and with his most recent project, jazz-rock quintet Red Sun (also awarded by the HEMU in 2014). He currently lives between Switzerland and Paris, and teaches at the Lausanne Conservatory as well as in the Compagnie Albertine (CH). Baiju, alongside jazz violin superstar Christian Howes, is the founder of the Creative Strings Workshop and Festival in Switzerland.

One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
