Being & Becoming

Peter Evans ist einer innovativsten zeitgenössischen Trompeter der Gegenwart; sein genreübergreifendes, hochvirtuoses und unverwechselbares Spiel brachte ihm Kritikerlob und begeisterte Fans weltweit ein. 2017 gründete er Being & Becoming und seitdem hat sich die Gruppe zu Evans' primärer Band und kompositorischem Ventil entwickelt. Sie vereint sowohl eine enorme Bandbreite an Einflüssen als auch die unglaubliche stilistische Vielfalt der Bandmitglieder. Nach zwei erfolgreichen Alben und mehreren Tourneen, wobei nun Synthesizer, explizit groove-orientierte Kompositionen, Einflüsse aus neuer und alter Musik in bahnbrechender, innotvativer Musik kulmunierten, nahm die Gruppe 2024 im legendären Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey ein neues Album auf, das 2025 erscheinen soll. Peter Evans ist Komponist, Trompeter, Improvisator und Bandleader und lebt seit 2003 in New York City. Seine Arbeit erstreckt sich über ein breites Spektrum moderner musikalischer Praktiken und Traditionen. Er leitet und komponiert für mehrere verschiedene Ensembles und arbeitet weiterhin in einer Vielzahl neuer Formationen, erforscht durchkomponierte Musik, Gruppenimprovisation, Arrangement und elektronische Musik. Besonders hervorzuheben sind seine Arbeiten mit der Band Mostly Other People do the Killing, Rapper Kanye West, Mary Halvorson, Peter Brötzmann sowie den deutschen Shooting-Stars Wanja Slavin und Christian Lillinger. Evans hat seine Werke bei großen Festivals weltweit vorgestellt und/oder aufgeführt und wurde im Jahr 2022 mit einem Guggenheim-Stipendium für Musikkomposition ausgezeichnet.

Joel Ross ist wohl der aufregendste junge Vibraphonist der Jazzwelt. Der 1995 geborene US-Amerikaner wurde schon in jungen Jahren von Jazzgrößen wie Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper und seinem Mentor Stefon Harris gefördert und machte sich schnell einen Namen. Kurz nach seinem Abschluss wurde er Mitglied der Band von Marquis Hill, was der Startpunkt für seinen Aufstieg zur Spitze der Szene wurde. Er arbeitete Walter Smith III, Gil Scott-Heron, Ulysses Owens und Altergenossen wie Immanuel Wilkins zusammen, nahm bereits mehrere Platten als Leader für Blue Note auf und wurde mehrfach vom legendären Down Beat Magazine als bester Vibraphonist ausgezeichnet.

Der Bassist, Multiinstrumentalist, Produzent, DJ und Komponist Nick Jozwiak lebt in New York City. Jozwiak hat eine Bass-Praxis kultiviert, die sich über alle Konventionen hinwegsetzt und klassische Technik mit einem Improvisationsstil kombiniert, der von der traditionellsten Jazzsprache bis zu den seltensten Texturen der modernen Musik reicht. Er ist mit Dave Liebman, Tyshawn Sorey, George Garzone, Aaron Burnett, Ravi Coltrane, Social Assassins, der elektronischen Musikgruppe Metadance und vielen anderen aufgetreten.

Michael Shekwoaga Ode ist ein nigerianisch-amerikanischer Schlagzeuger, Komponist. Der in Durham aufgewachsene Ode kam schon früh in der Kirche mit Gospel in Berührung und bekam im Alter von vier Jahren ein Schlagzeug geschenkt. Seitdem ließ ihn die Musik nicht mehr los. Ode studierte bei der Schlagzeuger-Legende Billy Hart am Oberlin Conservatory. Er spielte an der Seite von Van Morrison, Wallace Roney, Theo Croker, Les McCann, Gary Bartz, John Clayton, Peter Bernstein, Eddie Daniels, Cyrus Chestnut, Sullivan Fortner, JD Allen und Gerald Clayton.

Peter Evans is one of today's most innovative contemporary trumpeters; his cross-genre, highly virtuosic and distinctive playing has earned him critical acclaim and enthusiastic fans worldwide. In 2017 he founded Being & Becoming and since then the group has evolved into Evans' primary band and compositional outlet. It combines both an enormous range of influences and the incredible stylistic diversity of the band members. After two successful albums and several tours, synthesizers, explicitly groove-oriented compositions, and influences from new and old music culminated in groundbreaking, innovative music, the group recorded a new album in 2024 at the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, to be released in 2025. Peter Evans is a composer, trumpeter, improviser and bandleader based in New York City since 2003. His work spans a wide range of modern musical practices and traditions. He conducts and composes for several different ensembles and continues to work in a variety of new formations, exploring through-composed music, group improvisation, arranging and electronic music. Of particular note is his work with the band Mostly Other People do the Killing, Rapper Kanye West, Mary Halvorson, Peter Brötzmann and German shooting stars Wanja Slavin and Christian Lillinger. Evans has presented and/or performed his works at major festivals worldwide and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition in 2022.

Joel Ross is probably the most exciting young vibraphonist in the jazz world. Born in 1995, the US-American was encouraged at a young age by jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper and his mentor Stefon Harris and quickly made a name for himself. Shortly after graduating, he joined Marquis Hill's band, which was the starting point for his rise to the top of the scene. He worked with Walter Smith III, Gil Scott-Heron, Ulysses Owens and contemporaries such as Immanuel Wilkins, recorded several records as a leader for Blue Note and was repeatedly named best vibraphonist by the legendary Down Beat Magazine.

Bassist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, DJ and composer Nick Jozwiak is based in New York City. Jozwiak has cultivated a bass practice that defies convention, combining classical technique with an improvisational style that ranges from the most traditional jazz idiom to the rarest textures of modern music. He has performed with Dave Liebman, Tyshawn Sorey, George Garzone, Aaron Burnett, Ravi Coltrane, Social Assassins, the electronic music group Metadance and many others.

Michael Shekwoaga Ode is a Nigerian-American drummer and composer. Growing up in Durham, Ode came into contact with gospel music at an early age in church and was given a drum kit at the age of four. Since then, music has never let him go. Ode studied with drumming legend Billy Hart at the Oberlin Conservatory. He has played alongside Van Morrison, Wallace Roney, Theo Croker, Les McCann, Gary Bartz, John Clayton, Peter Bernstein, Eddie Daniels, Cyrus Chestnut, Sullivan Fortner, JD Allen and Gerald Clayton.
