Mit seiner Gabe, modernen Jazz mit Elementen aus jüdischer und arabischer Musik zu verquicken, zählt Klein zu den wichtigsten neuen Musikern – nicht nur des Jazz. Seine Kunst ist keine der stilistischen Abgrenzung, sondern der Öffnung. Frei von Klischees, offen für alles. Von Klassik bis hin zu mediterraner Volksmusik, von Rock bis Reggae. Vom passgenauen Zusammenspiel der drei Musiker bis zum unbegleiteten Solo des Trio-Vorstehers. „Personal Belongings“ heißt die aktuelle CD des Pianisten. Es ist sein bislang persönlichstes Statement. Freiheit, Austausch und Verbindung zwischen Menschen, Ländern, Gebräuchen und Sprachen spielen darin tragende Rollen. Dieser Spurensuche wie auch Neudefinition des nach allen Seiten offenen Jazzbegriffs über zwei Stunden zuzuhören, ist ein großer Genuss. Es ist Musik, die kompakt und klar strukturiert sich logisch entwickelt, aber dennoch das Gefühl von Freiheit vermittelt. Sie wirkt klar und doch verspielt. Die große Idee dahinter: Musik als sozialer Klebstoff schließt alle Grenzen.
With his gift for blending modern jazz with elements of Jewish and Arabic music, Klein is one of the most important emerging players - and not just in jazz. His art is not one of stylistic demarcation, but of opening. Free of clichés, open to everything. From classical to Mediterranean folk music, from rock to reggae. From the perfectly fitting interplay of the three musicians to the unaccompanied solo of the trio leader. "Personal Belongings" is the name of the pianist's latest CD. It is his most personal statement to date. Freedom, exchange and connection between people, countries, customs and languages play leading roles in it. Listening to this search for traces and redefinition of the concept of jazz, which is open in all directions, for over two hours is a great pleasure. It is music that develops logically in a compact and clearly structured way, but still conveys a feeling of freedom. It seems clear and yet playful. The big idea behind it: Music as social glue closes all borders.
