Defne Sahin und Johannes von Ballestrem verbindet eine langjährige musikalische Partnerschaft. Für dieses einmalige Doppelkonzert präsentieren die beiden in zwei Konzerten Ballestrems Band COR, Musik voll schlichter Schönheit und fesselnder Energie, sowie die Defne Sahin Band mit ihrem Album Hope. Die Jazzsängerin und Komponistin Defne Şahin hat eine musikalische Sprache entwickelt, die ihr Leben in verschiedenen Ländern widerspiegelt. In Berlin geboren, lebte die junge Musikerin bereits in New York, Istanbul und Barcelona. Ihr aktuelles Album Hope nahm sie mit ihrer langjährigen Berliner Band bestehend aus Johannes von Ballestrem, Keisuke Matsuno, Simon Jermyn und Martin Krümmling auf. Die Texte des Albums sind Defnes eigene und Bearbeitungen der Lyrik der amerikanischen Dichterin Emily Dickinson. Herausgekommen ist eine berührende Auseinandersetzung mit den Dichotomien Leben und Tod, Liebe und Sehnsucht, Angst und Hoffnung sowie dem Loslassen von all diesem. Das Album entstand unter anderem unter der Ägide von Defnes Mentorin Becca Stevens.

Mit seinem neuesten Projekt "COR" kreiert Johannes von Ballestrem Musik, die durch schlichte Schönheit und fesselnde Melodien begeistert. Der Pianist, der regelmäßig mit Stars wie Daniel Hope und Nils Landgren auftritt, vereint seinen einfühlsamen Stil mit Einflüssen aus Indie Rock und energetischen Grooves. Piano und E-Gitarre bilden den Kern des Bandsounds, angetrieben von der pulsierenden Rhythmusgruppe entstehen Songs, die berühren und mitreißen.

Bios:

Defne Sahin studierte unter anderem am Jazz-Institut Berlin und an der Manhattan School of Music bei renommierten DozentInnen wie Dave Liebman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Judy Niemack oder Gretchen Parlato. Sie trat in ihrer beeindruckenden Karriere schon international auf Festivals und in bedeutenden Häusern wie der legendären Carnegie Hall auf.

Johannes von Ballestrem ist ein Pianist, der mit musikalischer Diversität und vielfältigen Aktivitäten beeindruckt. Er studierte u.a. bei Michael Wollny und ist als gern gesehener Sideman bereits auf der ganzen Welt aufgetreten. In New Orleans beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit den frühen Spielarten des Jazz, später entdeckte er die Liebe zur Musik Brasiliens. Er spielte bereits mit Musikern wie Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nils Landgren und Norma Winstone, seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Geiger Daniel Hope brachte ihn als Solisten in Konzertsäle wie die Tonhalle Zürich, das Konzerthaus Berlin und die Elbphilharmonie.

Charis Karantzas ist ein versierter Gitarrist, der in Berlin, Deutschland, lebt. Erste Erfolge feierte er als Gitarrist in seinen Studienjahren in Amsterdam, bevor er nach Berlin kam, um am Jazz-Institut weiter an seinen Fähigkeiten zu feilen. Er tourt regelmäßig durch ganz Europa als Mitglied vieler kommerzieller, unabhängiger und Jazz-Acts. Er arbeitet regelmäßig im Studio als Studiomusiker und als Produzent und Mischer.

Der Gitarrist und Komponist Igor Osypov hat sich mit seinem knackigen, leicht verzerrten Sound zu einer der markantesten Stimmen im Jazz sowie in Indie-Rock und Fusion entwickelt. Eines der Alben, an denen er im Rahmen von Logan Richardsons Projekt „Blues People“ mitgearbeitet hat, wurde von der New York Times unter die Top 3 Jazzalben des Jahres 2018 aufgenommen.

Igor Spallati - geboren 1985 in Italien, begann er mit 19 Jahren Kontrabass zu spielen und studierte in Italien klassischen Kontrabass bei Silvio Bruni und Franco Petracchi. 2010 zog er nach Berlin, um am „Jazz Institut Berlin“ unter der Leitung von Greg Cohen, John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel und anderen zu studieren. Unter anderem hat er mit Ikonen des Jazz wie Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, Nasheet Waits, Jorge Rossy, Fred Hersch, Ethan Iverson, Ambrose Akinmusire, Lewis Nash, Elias Stemeseder, Jay Anderson, Ronnie Burrage, Pietro Tonolo, Gabriele Mirabassi, Dado Moroni, Joe Hisaishi, Louis Bacalov und der HR BigBand gearbeitet.

Martin Krümmling ist ein junger Schlagzeuger und Komponist, der mit seiner offenen Klangästhetik und seinem vielschichtigen und unverwechselbaren Sound überzeugt. Er ist Halbfinalist der renommierten Monk Competition 2012. Er hat bereits mit Jazzgrößen wie Ed Partyka, Lage Lund, Jason Moran, Dan Tepfer, David Friedman, Maucha Adnet und Bill Dobbins gespielt und ist mit ihnen aufgetreten.

Defne Şahin and Johannes von Ballestrem share a long-standing musical partnership. For this special double concert, they present two projects: Ballestrem’s band COR, known for its music of pure beauty and captivating energy, and the Defne Şahin Band with their latest album Hope. Jazz singer and composer Defne Şahin has developed a musical language that reflects her life in different countries. Born in Berlin, the young musician has already lived in New York, Istanbul and Barcelona. She recorded her latest album Hope with her longtime Berlin band consisting of Johannes von Ballestrem, Keisuke Matsuno, Simon Jermyn and Martin Krümmling. The album's lyrics are Defne's own and adaptations of poetry by American poet Emily Dickinson. The result is a touching exploration of the dichotomies of life and death, love and longing, fear and hope, and the letting go of it all. The album was created under the aegis of Defne's mentor Becca Stevens.

With his latest project "COR", Johannes von Ballestrem creates music that captivates with its simple beauty and compelling melodies. The pianist, who regularly performs with stars like Daniel Hope and Nils Landgren, combines his sensitive style with influences from indie rock and energetic grooves. She has performed internationally at festivals and major venues such as the legendary Carnegie Hall during her impressive career.

Johannes von Ballestrem, a pianist impressing with musical diversity, studied under Michael Wollny and has showcased his talents worldwide as a highly regarded sideman. Immersing himself in the early forms of jazz in New Orleans and later discovering a love for Brazilian music, he has collaborated with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nils Landgren, and Norma Winstone. His partnership with violinist Daniel Hope brought him as a soloist to prestigious concert halls like Tonhalle Zurich, Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Elbphilharmonie.

Charis Karantzas is an accomplished guitarist based in Berlin, Germany. He had his first successes as a guitarist during his student years in Amsterdam before coming to Berlin to further hone his skills at the Jazz Institute. He tours regularly throughout Europe as a member of many commercial, independent and jazz acts. He works regularly in the studio as a studio musician and as a producer and mixer.

Guitarist and composer Igor Osypov's crisp, slightly distorted sound has made him one of the most distinctive voices in jazz as well as indie rock and fusion.
