Was soll man zu Billy Cobham noch erklären? Er ist einer der Väter des Jazzrock und tonangebender Fusion-Leader. Miles Davis holte sich den blutjungen Cobham zu den „Bitches Brew“-Sessions ins Studio, die Musikgeschichte schrieben. Gitarrist John McLaughlins Mahavishnu Orchestra spielte mit dem Drummer die ebenfalls wegweisenden Alben „The Inner Mounting Flame“ und „Birds Of Fire“ ein.
Sein 1973 erschienenes Debütalbum wurde zum Meilenstein, mit der LP „Spectrum“ etablierte Cobham einen eigenen Stil zwischen Jazz, Rock und Funk und fand den Weg in die Plattensammlung so ziemlich jeden Jazzliebhabers. Er brachte zuvor unbekannte Spielweisen in die Jazz- und Rockmusik ein, die bis heute beide Musikrichtungen beeinflussen.
Von Miles Davis bis George Benson arbeitete Cobham mit fast allen Musiker-Größen zusammen, nicht nur im Jazz-Rock. Mit dem Neuaufleben seiner Band Time Machine, monumental besetzt mit Keyboardlegende Gary Husband, Saxophonist Bjorn Arko, Rocco Zifarelli an der Gitarre und Victor Cisternas am Bass bringt Cobham seine Stücke auf den neuesten Stand und zeigt, dass seine Musik bis heute nichts von ihrer Faszination einbüßt. Mit 79 Jahren strotzt Billy Cobham immer noch vor Kreativität, seine Konzerte sind legendär. Ein absolutes Highlight!
What more can be said about Billy Cobham? He is one of the founding fathers of jazz rock and a pioneering force in fusion. As a young drummer, Cobham was brought into the studio by none other than Miles Davis for the legendary Bitches Brew sessions — recordings that changed music history forever. Soon after, he joined guitarist John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, with whom he recorded the groundbreaking albums The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire.
His 1973 debut album Spectrum became a landmark recording, establishing Cobham’s unique blend of jazz, rock, and funk, and securing his place in virtually every serious jazz collection. Cobham introduced revolutionary techniques to both jazz and rock drumming, innovations that continue to shape the sound and approach of both genres to this day.
From Miles Davis to George Benson, Cobham has collaborated with nearly every major figure in music, far beyond just jazz rock. Now, with the revival of his band Time Machine — featuring an all-star lineup with keyboard legend Gary Husband, saxophonist Bjorn Arko, guitarist Rocco Zifarelli, and bassist Victor Cisternas — Cobham brings his classic pieces into the present, proving that his music is as powerful and captivating as ever.
