Scopes is an European jazz ensemble rooted in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam. The group consists of four musicians who met in New York, where each spent several years and developed his own style in music. In this group four individual composers with sense for the pulse of time have joined to form a whole and create a distinct band-sound. While their music is deeply grounded in the jazz tradition, their songs serve as a platform to explore new realms through improvisation. Like a kaleidoscope, their music keeps evolving and makes every concert an unique experience for the listener. The acoustic quartet produces a transparent, modern sound that stands out from the classic line up of alto saxophone, piano, double bass and drums. Before recording their debut album, Scopes sets off for a tour in some of Europe’s greatest jazz clubs.
The dutch saxophonist Ben van Gelder recently returned to Amsterdam after spending ten years in New York where he became an important voice of the scene. He has performed all around the world in various settings and formations and has been the recipient of multiple honors and awards including the “Deloitte Jazz Award” (2009). Ben studied with jazz greats such as Lee Konitz and Mark Turner, and shared the stage with many acclaimed musicians such as Ben Street and Ambrose Akinmusire.
Tony Tixier has been a steady member of Logan Richardson's Band for years and has also performed with Christian Scott's group. The french pianist released his Album "Dream Pursuit" with Logan Richardson, Burniss Earl Travis and Justin Brown in 2012. Since 2014, Tony has been living in New York, where he has established himself as part of the jazz scene and has performed with the jazz trombone legend Dick Griffin, Seamus Blake and Kendrick Scott, among others.
Tom Berkmann studied double bass at the Jazz Institut Berlin and then as a DAAD scholar at Manhattan School of Music in New York. He was a semifinalist in the International Double Bass Competition "Bass 2010", received the German Academy Award in 2013 for the Best Film Score, and won the German Critics Award at the Berlin Film Festival for the Soundtrack of the Feature Movie "Oh Boy".
The Austrian drummer and composer Mathias Ruppnig is a well in demand musician of the Berlin jazz scene. With his own projects "The Spinning", "Square Quartet" and "DACH" he t oursEurope regularly. He completed both a Bachelor and Master’s Degree at the University for Music and Performing Arts, in Graz, Austria. As a leader he released two albums "square" and "The Spinning" with the Viennese label, Session Work Records. In 2014, he won the Downbeat Award for College Graduate Outstanding Performance in the Latin group category with the KUG Composers’ Ensemble featuring Marco Antonio de Costa.
SCOPES ist ein europäisches Jazz-Ensemble mit Wurzeln in Berlin, Paris und Amsterdam. Die vier Musiker haben sich in New York kennengelernt, wo jeder von ihnen mehrere Jahre gelebt und seinen eigenen persönlichen Stil entwickelt hat. In dieser Gruppe haben sich vier Komponisten mit Sinn für den Puls der Zeit zusammengeschlossen, um eine Einheit zu bilden und einen einzigartigen Band-Sound zu kreieren. Tief in der Jazztradition verankert, nutzen sie ihre Stücke als Basis, um durch Improvisation neue Bereiche zu erkunden. Wie ein Kaleidoskop entwickelt sich ihre Musik und macht jedes Konzert zu einem einzigartigen Erlebnis für den Zuhörer und die Musiker selbst. Das akustische Quartett erzeugt einen transparenten und modernen Sound, der sich von der klassischen Besetzung mit Altsaxofon, Klavier, Kontrabass und Schlagzeug abhebt. Bevor sie ihr Debütalbum aufnehmen, geht SCOPES auf Tour in einigen von Europas besten Jazzclubs.

Der niederländische Saxophonist Ben van Gelder ist nach einem zehnjährigen Aufenthalt in New York, wo er sich als wichtiger Bestandteil der Szene profiliert hat, nach Amsterdam zurückgekehrt. Er ist mit verschiedenen Formationen und Besetzungen bereits weltweit aufgetreten und wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem 2009 mit dem “Deloitte Jazz Award”. Ben erhielt Unterricht bei Jazzgrößen wie Lee Konitz und Mark Turner und stand mit vielen anerkannten Musikern auf der Bühne, wie unter anderem Ben Street und Ambrose Akinmusire.
Tony Tixier ist seit Jahren festes Mitglied in Logan Richardson's Band und war bereits mit der Band von Christian Scott zu hören. Der französische Pianist hat 2012 sein Album "Dream Pursuit" with Logan Richardson, Burniss Earl Travis and Justin Brown veröffentlicht. Seit 2014 lebt er in New York, wo er mittlerweile fester Bestandteil der Szene geworden ist und unter anderem mit der Posaunen-Legende Dick Griffin, Seamus Blake, Kendrick Scott aufgetreten ist.
Tom Berkmann hat zunächst am Jazz Institut Berlin und anschließend als DAAD Stipendiat an der Manhattan School of Music in New York Kontrabass studiert. Der Semifinalist des Internationalen Kontrabass Wettbewerbs "Bass 2010" erhielt für den Soundtrack des Kinofilms «Oh Boy» 2013 den Deutschen Filmpreis für Beste Filmmusik, und im Rahmen der Berlinale den Deutschen Kritikerpreis.
Der österreichische Schlagzeuger und Komponist Mathias Ruppnig, ist ein viel gefragter Musiker der Berliner Szene, der mit seinen eigenen Projekten "The Spinning" und "Square Quartet" und «DACH» regelmäßig europaweit auf Tournee ist. An der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz hat er sowohl sein Bachelor-, als auch Masterstudium absolviert. Als Bandleader veröffentlichte er zwei Album, "square" und "The Spinning", die auf dem Wiener Label Session Work Records erschienen sind. 2014 erhielt er mit dem KUG Composers’ Ensemble featuring Marco Antonio de Costa den Downbeat Award for College Graduate Outstanding Performance.

One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
EINTRITT
Einer der Gründe, die den Zig Zag Jazzclub so einzigartig machen, ist, dass er der erste und einzige Jazzclub der Welt ist, dem es gelingt nur durch freiwilligem Eintritt/Crowdfunding Events von Weltklasse zu finanzieren. Und wie machen wir das? Ganz einfach. Während der Konzertpause geben wir bekannt, dass wir Geld einsammeln werden. Bei den meisten Konzerten (außer Jam Sessions) informieren wir unsere Kunden, dass ein Beitrag von ungefähr 15 Euro es uns erlaubt die Musiker gerecht zu bezahlen. Manche geben dabei mehr und andere weniger... und das ist auch in Ordnung. Wir haben auf diese Weise schon Hunderte Konzerte organisiert.
