Die junge kanadische Klarinettistin Virginia MacDonald ist ein echter „Shooting Star“ des nordamerikanischen Jazz. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Toronto, begann sie im Alter von sieben Jahren Klarinette zu spielen. Schon in jungen Jahren etablierte sie sich als international höchst anerkannte Solistin und spielt regelmäßig auf den größten Festivals und in den wichtigsten Clubs weltweit, wie z. B. Detroit Jazz Festival, Rochester Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scotts, Duc des Lombards u. v. m. Sie gewann eine Vielzahl an Preisen, u. a. 2020 die „International Clarinetist Corona Competition“. 2023 ist sie Gastsolist beim 50 Jahre-Jubiläum der „International Clarinet Association“ in Denver. Sie spielte u. a. mit Harold Mabern, Ira Coleman, Geoff Keezer, Rodney Whitaker und Pat Labarbera, und ist gemeinsam mit ihrem Vater Kirk MacDonald Mitglied im sehr erfolgreichen „Canadian Jazz Collective“.

Joe Magnarelli aus New York gehört seit drei Jahrzehnten zu den weltweit führenden Trompetern. Er schloss sein Studium am SUNY-Fredonia 1982 ab und zog 1986 nach New York. Zunächst arbeitete er von 1987-89 in der Lionel Hampton Bigband und dann von 1989-94 mit dem Organisten Brother Jack McDuff. 1991 gründete er das New York Hard Bop Quintet und leitete in Folge eigene Gruppen mit John Swana und Jerry Weldon. Zudem spielte er als Sideman mit Toshiko Akiyoshi, Laverne Butler, Harry Connick, Jr., der Buddy Rich Band, Maria Schneider, Grant Stewart, dem Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Ray Barretto u. v. a.

Dieses internationale Quintett wird von drei herausragenden, europäischen Begleitern vervollständigt: Pianist Oliver Kent und Bassist Rudi Engel gehören zu den meist gebuchten Sidemen Europas und arbeiten seit 30 Jahren mit wirklich allen Größen der Szene. Sie spielten u. a. mit Gianni Basso, Charlie Mariano, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, George Coleman, Al Grey, Sweets Edison, Scott Hamilton und Sal Nistico. Der österreichische Schlagzeuger Bernd Reiter, Preisträger beim Hans Koller Preis im Jahre 2006 und nach Jahren in München und Paris, nun wieder in Österreich bzw. New York lebend, spielte ebenso mit vielen Größen des Jazz wie Don Menza, Charles Davis, Harold Mabern, Cyrus Chestnut, Kirk Lightsey, Mundell Lowe, Steve Grossman, Claudio Roditi u. v. m.

Canadian clarinetist Virginia MacDonald is one of the most exciting new voices in North American jazz. Born and raised in Toronto, she began playing the clarinet at the age of seven and quickly established herself as an internationally recognized soloist. She regularly performs at major festivals and clubs such as the Detroit, Rochester, Toronto, and Montreal Jazz Festivals, as well as Ronnie Scott’s and Duc des Lombards. Among her many accolades, she won the 2020 “International Clarinetist Corona Competition” and was a featured soloist at the 50th anniversary of the International Clarinet Association in Denver in 2023. She has performed with Harold Mabern, Ira Coleman, Geoff Keezer, Rodney Whitaker, and Pat LaBarbera, and is also a member of the acclaimed Canadian Jazz Collective alongside her father, Kirk MacDonald.

On this tour, she is joined by one of the leading trumpeters of the international jazz scene: Joe Magnarelli. Based in New York, Magnarelli has been at the forefront of jazz trumpet for more than three decades. After graduating from SUNY-Fredonia in 1982, he moved to New York in 1986. He played in the Lionel Hampton Big Band (1987–89) and with organist Brother Jack McDuff (1989–94). In 1991, he founded the New York Hard Bop Quintet and later led his own groups alongside John Swana and Jerry Weldon.
