Das Crusaders Project & Beyond ist ein Kollektiv amerikanischer und französischer Musiker, die die Musik der legendären Jazz Crusaders ehren und bewahren. Groove-, Spritual- und Straight-Ahead-Jazz vom Allerfeinsten! Die Gruppe um den legendären Joe Sample bewies nicht nur Können und Geschmack im Jazzbereich, sondern war auch im Popbereich mit Songs wie “Street Life” mit Randy Crawford oder “Soul Shadows” mit Bill Withers erfolgreich.
Die fünf Hauptakteure des heutigen Abends lassen diese wunderbare Musik wieder aufleben. Sie sind in der Berliner Szene alles andere als Unbekannte und gehören zu den Top-Instrumentalisten mit felsenfester stilistischer Expertise.

Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq ist seit 1972 professionell als Musiker tätig. Nach seinem College-Abschluss absolvierte er ein Postgraduiertenstudium bei dem verstorbenen großen afro-amerikanischen Pianisten Horace Tapscott und der UGMAA (Union of God's Musicians and Artist Ascension) in Los Angeles, Kalifornien. Dies führte zu einer lebenslangen Zusammenarbeit mit Tapscotts Pan-African People's Arkestra (PAPA), in der er als Assistenzdirigent, Arrangeur, Komponist und Texter tätig war, um seine Aufgaben am Saxophon, der Klarinette und der Flöte zu begleiten. 1991 kam Fuasi nach Berlin, wo er sich einen Namen in der Jazzszene der Stadt machte. In den letzten 23 Jahren tourte Fuasi durch Europa, Asien, Afrika und Mittelamerika, er leitete seine eigenen Ensembles wie Fuasi & Ensemble, The Ebony Big Band Experience, The Horace Tapscott Memorial Ensemble und die Afro Cubano Latin Jazz Connection.

Kelvin Lamar Sholar ist ein Pianist und Keyboarder aus Detroit, Michigan. Er begann als Gospelsänger mit seinen Eltern, entwickelte sich aber später zum Klassik- und Jazzpianisten und gewann mit sechzehn Jahren den Wettbewerb des Michigan Bach Festivals. Sholar arbeitete zunächst mit lokalen Künstlern (wie Marcus Belgrave oder Francisco Mora-Catlett), bevor er auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene mit Jazz-Größen wie Wallace Roney, Kevin Saunderson, Mark Turner, Greg Osby, Caron Wheeler, Jerry Gonzales oder John Tchicai auftrat. Seine Arbeit beschränkt sich allerdings nicht nur auf den Jazz: Er kollaborierte auch mit Stevie Wonder, Star-Geiger Nigel Kennedy und Techno-Pionier Carl Craig.

Geoffroy De Masure begann im Alter von vierzehn Jahren mit dem Posaunen- und Klavierspiel. Von 1985 bis 1989 studierte er am Konservatorium in Avignon klassische Posaune bei Bernard Buffet und Jazz bei André Jaume. Mit 18 Jahren begann er professionell in Rock- und Funkbands zu spielen und bekam erste Jazz-Engagements mit eigenen Bands. 1989 tourte er acht Monate lang mit Harald Juhnke und Georg Preuße durch Deutschland. Für weitere Studien zog er 1990 nach New York, wo er Unterricht bei Robin Eubanks nahm; zudem partizipierte er am Jazz-Programm des kanadischen Banff Center for the Arts. Zurück in Frankreich spielte er 1991 in der Medium Band von Manu Pekar, die später mit Dave Liebman aufnahm, und begann Kompositionen für seine eigene Band Quadrature zu schreiben. Auf Festivals trat er u. a. mit Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, Albert Mangelsdorff, Fred Hersch und Nguyên Lê auf.

Charles Sammons ist ein amerikanischer Bassist, Komponist und Pädagoge. Sammons ist auf dem Kontrabass, dem E-Bass und dem Cello gleichermaßen zu Hause. Obwohl er fest in der Tradition verankert ist, stößt er oft an die Grenzen von Jazz, Electronica, Rock und Pop. Im Alter von 14 Jahren begann Charles Sammons ein Studium der Komposition und Performance an der University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Sein Studium setzte er allerdings in den Clubs und Jazzkellern von Washington fort, wo er seine einzigartige und innovative Spielweise perfektionierte Seit 10 Jahren lebt und arbeitet Samens nun in Berlin, wo er ein unverzichtbarer Teil der hiesigen Jazz-Szene geworden ist.

Kenny Martin ist Schlagzeuger, Lehrer, Produzent und Sound-Engineer geboren in: Brooklyn, New York und aufgewachsen in Queens, New York. Martin studierte am Berklee College of Music in Boston bei Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Lenny White, Elvin Jones und Narada Michael Walden. Er leitet seine eigenen Ensembles und ist mit Defunkt, Peter Fox, No Angels, Jaco Pastorius, Kenny Kirkland, Lester Bowie, Jean-Paul Bourelly, HHR Big Band und Jeff Lorber aufgetreten. Martin ist auf fast 150 Aufnahmen zu hören und unterrichtet seit über 47 Jahren Schlagzeug in 7 verschiedenen Ländern.

The Crusaders Project & Beyond is a collective of American and French musicians who honor and preserve the music of the legendary Jazz Crusaders. Groove, spritual and straight-ahead jazz at its finest! The group, led by the legendary Joe Sample, not only demonstrated skill and taste in jazz, but was also successful in pop with songs such as "Street Life" with Randy Crawford and "Soul Shadows" with Bill Withers. The five main actors of tonight's show revive this wonderful music. They are anything but unknowns on the Berlin scene and are among the top instrumentalists with rock solid stylistic expertise.

Fuasi Abdul-Khaliq has been performing professionally since 1972. After graduating from college, he did his post­graduate studies with the late great African-American pianist, Horace Tapscott and UGMAA (Union of God's Musicians and Artist Ascension) in Los Angeles, California. This led to a lifetime relationship with Tapscott's Pan-African People's Arkestra (PAPA), during which time he served as assistant conductor, arranger, composer, copyist to accompany his duties on saxophone, clarinet and flute. In 1991, Fuasi came to Berlin, where he became a name in the city's jazz scene. For the last 23 years, Fuasi has toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America, he has led his own ensembles such as Fuasi & Ensemble, The Ebony Big Band Experience, The Horace Tapscott Memorial Ensemble and the Afro Cubano Latin Jazz Connection.

Kelvin Lamar Sholar is a pianist and keyboardist from Detroit, Michigan. He began as a gospel singer with his parents, but later developed into a classical and jazz pianist, winning the Michigan Bach Festival competition at the age of sixteen. Sholar first worked with local artists (such as Marcus Belgrave and Francisco Mora-Catlett) before performing nationally and internationally with jazz greats such as Wallace Roney, Kevin Saunderson, Mark Turner, Greg Osby, Caron Wheeler, Jerry Gonzales, and John Tchicai. However, his work is not limited to jazz: he has also collaborated with Stevie Wonder, star violinist Nigel Kennedy and techno pioneer Carl Craig.

In 1989 he toured Germany for eight months with Harald Juhnke and Georg Preuße. For further studies he moved to New York in 1990, where he took lessons with Robin Eubanks; he also participated in the jazz program of the Canadian Banff Center for the Arts. Back in France in 1991, he played in Manu Pekar's Medium Band, which later recorded with Dave Liebman, and began writing compositions for his own band, Quadrature. He has performed at festivals with Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, Greg Osby, Albert Mangelsdorff, Fred Hersch and Nguyên Lê, among others.

Charles Sammons is an American bassist, composer, and educator. Sammons is equally at home on the double bass, electric bass and cello. Although firmly rooted in tradition, he often pushes the boundaries of jazz, electronica, rock and pop. At the age of 14, Charles Sammons began studying composition and performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. However, he continued his studies in the clubs and jazz basements of Washington, where he perfected his unique and innovative style of playing For the past 10 years, Samens now lives and works in Berlin, where he has become an indispensable part of the local jazz scene.

Kenny Martin is a Drummer, Teacher, Producer, Engineer born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Queens, New York. Martin studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston with Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, Lenny White, Elvin Jones & Narada Michael Walden. Kenny Martin is a leader of his own ensembles, and has performed with Defunkt, Peter Fox, No Angels, Jaco Pastorius, Kenny Kirkland, Lester Bowie, Jean-Paul Bourelly, HHR Big Band and Jeff Lorber. Martin been recorded on nearly 150 recordings and has been teaching drums for over 47 years in 7 different countries.
