The North, ein internationales All-Star-Kollektiv feiert das Vermächtnis eines der bedeutendsten Jazzkomponisten überhaupt, Kenny Wheeler. Die langjährige musikalische Weggefährtin von Wheeler und legendäre britische Sängerin Norma Winstone ist dabei die Gallionsfigur der Gruppe. Winstone erscheint auf zahlreichen Wheeler-Aufnahmen, darunter auf dem genreprägenden Album Music for Large and Small Ensembles. Auch arbeitete Winstone mit Wheeler im Trio “Azimuth“ zusammen, welches zu den Top-Acts des legendären ECM-Jazzlabels gehörte. Norma Winstone ist eine britische Jazz-Sängerin und -Pädagogin. Als Stipendiatin des Londoner Trinity College of Music studierte Norma Winstone drei Jahre lang Klavier und Orgel. 1971 wurde sie vom Melody Maker als beste Jazzsängerin ausgezeichnet, was dazu führte, dass sie ihr erstes Album unter eigenem Namen aufnehmen konnte. 1977 begründete sie mit John Taylor und dem Trompeter Kenny Wheeler die Gruppe Azimuth, die von der Londoner Times als die phantasievollste und interessanteste kammermusikalische Jazzgruppe weltweit bezeichnet wurde. Im Laufe ihrer langen und beeindruckenden Karriere arbeitete sie mit Kenny Wheeler, Steve Swallow, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Peter Erskine, John Taylor, Fred Hersch, John Surman, Jimmy Rowles, der NDR-Big Band und mehr. Sie ist außerdem als Jazzpädagogin an der Royal Academy of Music tätig. Im Jahr 2001 gewann Norma Winstone den Titel „Best Vocalist“ beim BBC Jazz Award. Für 2009 wurde ihr der Jazzahead-Skoda-Award 2009 zugesprochen. Ihr 2007 gemeinsam mit Glauco Venier und Klaus Giesing eingespieltes Album Distances wurde 2009 für einen Grammy nominiert.

Percy Pugslove ist ein britischer Jazztrompeter. Er studierte in Birmingham und New York und gilt als einer der besten Trompeter seiner Generation. Er ist seit den 2000ern in der ersten Riege der europäischen Jazzer unterwegs und spielte mit Evan Parker, Chris Potter, Bill Frisell und vielen anderen Jazzgrößen. Als Studiomusiker arbeitete er ebenfalls mit Amy Winehouse und Jamie Cullum. Weiterhin ist er festes Mitglied der NDR Bigband.

Mike Murley ist ein kanadischer Saxophonist. Er arbeitete mit Mainstream- wie führenden Jazzartists zusammen und war als Leader und Sideman and 14 mit dem Juno-Award ausgezeichneten Tonträgerproduktionen aktiv beteiligt. Sein Portfolio umfasst Arbeiten mit Dave Liebman, Paul Bley und John Scofield. Ebenso ist er ein renommierter Jazzpädagoge, der neben seiner Tätigkeit als aktiver Musiker Lehraufträge an mehreren Instituten in Kanada hält.

Die preisgekrönte Jazzpianistin und Komponistin Nikki Iles war Gründungsmitglied des Creative Jazz Orchestra, das mit Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler und Anthony Braxton zusammenarbeitete. Außerdem arbeitete sie in ihrer Karriere als Leaderin und Sidewoman mit Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Mike Walker, Mark Lockheart, Tina May, Claire Martin und Christine Jenson zusammen und machte Aufnahmen mit Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzmann, Norma Winstone, Dave Holland, Jeff Williams und Rufus Reid. Mit über 30 CDs, die sie in drei Jahrzehnten aufgenommen hat, wird sie inzwischen von der Fachpresse als „Heldin des britischen Jazz“ bezeichnet. Außerdem ist sie eine hervorragende Komponistin, die unter anderem mit der NDR Big Band zusammenarbeitete.

Johnny Åman wurde 1986 in der kleinen Stadt Nykarleby in Finnland geboren. Im Jahr 2005 zog er nach Schweden, um an der Musikhochschule Malmö Musik zu studieren, und 2010 schloss er sein Studium mit einem Master ab. Heute ist Johnny einer der meistbeschäftigten Bassisten Schwedens und hat unter anderem mit Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Liebman, Marcus Strickland, Tony Malaby, George Garzone, Phil Grenadier, Peter Epstein und Gerard Precenser gearbeitet.

Seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten ist der Schlagzeuger Anders Mogensen einer der wichtigsten Musiker der dänischen und internationalen Jazzszene. Er war Mitglied von bahnbrechenden Bands wie When Granny Sleeps, Jakob Anderskov Trio, Doky Brothers und dem Copenhagen Art Ensemble. Er tourte und machte Aufnahmen mit Jazzgrößen wie: Bob Berg, David Liebman, Steve Swallow, Marc Johnson, Brecker Brothers, Gary Thomas, Django Bates, Tim Hagans, Cuong Vu, Lew Soloff und Ray Anderson. Anders ist Professor und Leiter der Jazzabteilung an der Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense.

The North, an international all-star collective, celebrates the legacy of one of the most important jazz composers of all time, Kenny Wheeler. Wheeler's long-time musical companion and legendary British singer Norma Winstone is the figurehead of the group. Winstone appears on numerous Wheeler recordings, including the genre-defining album Music for Large and Small Ensembles. Winstone also worked with Wheeler in the trio “Azimuth”, which was one of the top acts on the legendary ECM jazz label. Award winning jazz pianist and composer, Nikki Iles was a founder member of the innovative Creative Jazz Orchestra – working with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton .She has had a busy freelance career working with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Mike Walker, Mark Lockheart, Tina May, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson amongst others and also recording with Kenny Wheeler , Stan Sulzmann, Norma Winstone, Dave Holland, Jeff Williams and Rufus Reid. With over 30 CDs recorded over 3 decades, she has been described as the “Heroine of British Jazz”.

Johnny Åman was born in1986 in a small city of Nykarleby, Finland. In 2005 he moved to Sweden to study music at Malmö Academy of Music, and in 2010 he graduated with a Masters degree. Today Johnny is one of the Sweden’s busiest bass players.
