Der große Jazzpianist und -komponist Bill Evans ist am 15. September 1980 auf tragische Weise verstorben, doch seine Noten und seine Magie bleiben absolut lebendig. Seine Unsterblichkeit wird heute von dem puertoricanischen Kontrabassisten Eddie Gomez, der von '66 bis '77 elf Jahre lang mit Evans spielte, und von dem amerikanischen Schlagzeuger Joe LaBarbera gefeiert, der in seinen letzten Lebensjahren nicht weniger als 16 Alben mit dem legendären Pianisten und Komponisten aufnahm. Gemeinsam mit dem italienischen Starpianisten Dado Moroni bilden sie Kind of Bill, ein Trio, das mehr als nur Tribute-Band ist, sondern die musikalische Seele Evans durch seine Stücke, aber auch durch an Evans’ Werk angelehnte Eigenkompositionen wieder lebendig werden lässt.

Dado Moroni, ein Pianist, der den Jazz noch “Oldschool”, also autodidaktisch erlernte, spielte schon in jungen Jahren mit italienischen Jazzgrößen und machte erste Studioaufnahmen. Ab 1979 schaffte er den Sprung in die internationale Jazzelite, als er mit Legenden wie Chet Baker und Johnny Griffin spielte. Er war Mitglied im James Moody Quartet, spielte des Weiteren mit Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Zoo Sims, Lewis Nash, Lee Konitz und mehr zusammen und nahm Alben mit unter Anderem Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter und Enrico Pieranunzi auf. Nach Jahren in den vereinigten Staaten lebt und wirkt er wieder in seiner Heimat Italien.

Eddie Gomez gehört zu den profiliertesten und einflussreichsten Bassisten der Jazzgeschichte. Er studierte an der Juilliard School of Music, nachdem er bereits in New York aufgewachsen war. Schon in jungen Jahren musizierte er mit Künstlern wie Chick Corea und Paul Bley und wurde mit 22 Jahren Bassist im Quartett von Bill Evans. Auch arbeitete er mit Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Cobb, McCoy Tyner und vielen mehr. Dabei war er Teil einiger wegweisender Albenproduktionen wie Mingus von Joni Mitchell und war Teil der legendären Supergroup Steps Ahead mit Saxophon-Titan Michael Brecker.

Joe LaBarbera ist ein US-amerikanischer Schlagzeuger, der besonders durch seine Arbeit im letzten Trio von Bill Evans einer breiten Öffentlichkeit bekannt wurde. Er studierte am Berklee College of Music und spiele danach in den Bands von Woody Herman und Chuck Mangione. Er wurde schnell ein äußerst gefragter Drummer, Referenzen seiner weiteren Arbeit sind beispielweise Tony Bennett, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Toots Thielemanns und Lee Konitz. Er ist ebenfalls ein leidenschaftlicher Jazzpädagoge und unterrichtete an der Arizona State University und am California Institute of Arts. Sein Bruder ist der Saxophonist Pat LaBarbera.

The great jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans died tragically on September 15, 1980, but his notes and his magic remain absolutely alive. His immortality is celebrated today by the Puerto Rican double bassist Eddie Gomez, who played with Evans for eleven years from '66 to '77, and by the American drummer Joe LaBarbera, who recorded no less than 16 albums with the legendary pianist and composer in the last years of his life. Together with the Italian star pianist Dado Moroni, they form Kind of Bill, a trio that is more than just a tribute band, but brings Evans' musical soul back to life through his pieces as well as his own compositions.

As a pianist who still learned jazz in the "oldschool", that is, self-taught, he played with Italian jazz greats at a young age and made his first studio recordings as well. From 1979 he made the leap into the international jazz elite, playing with legends such as Chet Baker and Johnny Griffin. He was a member of the James Moody Quartet, played with Clark Terry, Freddie Hubbard, Zoot Sims, Lewis Nash, Lee Konitz and more, and recorded albums with Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter and Enrico Pieranunzi, among others. After years in the United States, he lives and works again in his native Italy.

Joe LaBarbera is an American drummer who became known to the general public through his work in Bill Evans' last trio. He studied at Berklee College of Music and then played in the bands of Woody Herman and Chuck Mangione. He quickly became a highly sought-after drummer, with references to his other work including Tony Bennett, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Jim Hall, Toots Thielemanns and Lee Konitz. He is also a passionate jazz educator and has taught at Arizona State University and the California Institute of Arts. His brother is the saxophonist Pat LaBarbera.
