Unprätentiös. Das ist das Erste, was auf- und einfällt, wenn man das neue Album des Julia Hülsmann Quartetts The Next Door in das Abspielgerät seiner Wahl legt. Dann: Organisch. Als müsse hier jeder Ton, jeder Klang, von Natur aus genau so sein, wie er ist. Und: Offen. Denn das ist dieses Quartett, ein um Julia Hülsmann (Klavier), Marc Muellbauer (Bass) und Heinrich Köbberling (Schlagzeug) gewachsenes Trio eigentlich, das seit neunzehn Jahren zusammen spielt und schon immer gern den einen oder anderen Gast zum Mittun eingeladen, aber erst durch Tenorsaxophonist Uli Kempendorff zu einer echten Quartettform gefunden hat. Kempendorff nämlich gelingt es nicht nur, dem immer leicht über den Dingen schwebenden, den Kopf in den Wolken habenden, ätherischen Triosound die eine oder andere Kante abzutrotzen, sondern auch, ihn zu erden. Eine Musik, die ganz greifbar ist, eben wie die Girls & Boys next door.

Eine Tür weiter geht also das zweite gemeinsame Album des Quartetts. Immerhin hat man auch in Lockdown-Zeiten oft miteinander geprobt, zahlreiche Konzerte gespielt und ist viel gereist, was nun in einem noch intensiveren Zusammenspiel gipfelt. Obwohl es schon beim Quartettdebüt basisdemokratisch zuging – schließlich brachten bereits hier alle Mitglieder ihre eigenen Stücke in die Platte ein, ist die Aufgabenverteilung jetzt noch einmal offener. Feste Rollen? Gibt es nicht.

Von epischem Flow über hochkomplexe, nur für Haushaltsangehörige durchschaubare Strukturen, durch die das Saxophon zu einer Art Erkundungsspaziergang einlädt, bis zu hypnotischen, afrobeatesken Grooves und inklusive dem für Hülsmann charakteristischen Coverstück, wie immer mit Riesenrespekt vor dem Original bearbeitet: das preisgekrönte Quartett der Pianistin und Komponistin - gleich für das erste Album „Not Far From Here“ gab es 2021 den Deutschen Jazzpreis für das beste Instrumentalalbum (national) - erreicht mit dem Nachfolger „The Next Door“ auch das nächste Level.

Julia Hülsmann, 1968 in Bonn geboren, spielt seit ihrem elften Lebensjahr Klavier. Ihre erste Band gründete sie mit sechzehn Jahren. 1991 zog sie nach Berlin, um an der Universität der Künste zu studieren. Zu ihren Dozenten zählten u.a. Walter Norris, Aki Takase, David Friedman und Jerry Granelli. Mit einem Stipendium des Berliner Senats ging sie Anfang 2000 nach New York und vertiefte ihre Studien dort bei Richie Beirach, Maria Schneider, Gil Goldstein und Jane Ira Bloom. Heute hat sie selbst Lehraufträge an der Universität der Künste in Berlin und der Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hannover. Obwohl sie vor allem auf die Arbeit mit ihrem eigenen Trio mit Marc Muellbauer und Heinrich Köbberling fokussiert ist, findet Julia Hülsmann auch Zeit für andere Projekte. Seit 1992 hat sie Kontakt zum Bundesjugendjazzorchesters (BuJazzO), für das sie zuletzt 2009 eine selbst geschriebene Suite arrangierte. Mit dem Gitarristen Marc Sinan nahm sie im selben Jahr für ECM das Album “Fasil” auf. Außerdem begleitete sie die Sängerin Céline Rudolph 2006 bei ihrem Projekt “Lisboa – Maputo – Berlin”.

Uli Kempendorff studierte an der HfM »Hanns Eisler« Berlin und in New York am City College Saxophon und Improvisation. Kempendorffs Arbeit ist auf gut zwei Dutzend CDs, Schallplatten und Rundfunkmitschnitten dokumentiert, bei Labels wie WhyPlayJazz, ECM, Enja/Yellowbird oder Four Music. Darunter befinden sich fünf eigene Produktionen mit »Field« und Yellow Bird. Neben seinen eigenen Projekten »Field« (seit 2018 mit Christopher Dell, Peter Bruun und Jonas Westergaard) und »Yellow Bird« (eine Modern-Roots-Band mit ehemals Lucia Cadotsch, Manon Kahle und Ronny Graupe) ist und war Uli Kempendorff aktiv in Gruppen mit u.a. Benjamin Weidekamp, Julia Hülsmann, Felix Henkelhausen, Tobias Delius, Rudi Mahall, Wanja Slavin, Markus Pesonen, Janning Trumann, Pablo Held, Mike Pride, Christian Weber; er spielte mit SEEED, Rolf Kühn, ‪Jimi Tenor und 'Little' Jimmy Scott. Kempendorff erhielt mehrere Projekt-, Studio-, und Kompositionsstipendien des Berliner Senats und 2006/07 als DAAD-Jahres-Stipendiat in New York City.

Bassist Marc Muellbauer kam 1968 in London zur Welt, lebt aber seit seinem dritten Lebensjahr in Deutschland. Nach einem Studium an der Folkwang-Hochschule ging er 1996 nach Berlin, um bei Michael Wolf an der Universität der Künste weiter zu studieren. Dort gründete er 2000 seine neunköfige Band Kaleidoscope. Musikalisch breit aufgestellt arbeitet Muellbauer in den verschiedensten musikalischen Bereichen, von Jazz bis hin zu zeitgenössischer klassischer Musik. An der Berliner Hanns-Eisler-Hochschule für Musik ist er seit 1998 Dozent für Kontrabass.

Schlagzeuger Heinrich Köbberling, 1967 im hessischen Bad Arolsen geboren, studierte in Hamburg und an der New School in New York. Er hat unter anderem schon mit Aki Takase, Richie Beirach, Gary Peacock und Ernie Watts zusammengearbeitet und war an der Einspielung von rund 50 Jazzalben beteiligt. 1997 nahm er mit Bassist Marc Johnson und Gitarrist Ben Monder unter dem Titel “Pisces” sein bislang einziges Album als Leader auf. Köbberling ist heute außerdem noch Mitglied der Post-Techno/House-Band 8doogymoto und unterrichtet an der Musikhochschule in Leipzig Schlagzeug.

Unpretentious. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you put the Julia Hülsmann Quartet's new album The Next Door into your player of choice. Then: organic. As if every note here, every sound, must by nature be exactly as it is. And: Open. Because that's what this quartet is, a trio that has grown around Julia Hülsmann (piano), Marc Muellbauer (bass) and Heinrich Köbberling (drums), which has been playing together for nineteen years and has always liked to invite one or the other guest to join in, but only found its way to a real quartet form through tenor saxophonist Uli Kempendorff. Kempendorff succeeds not only in wringing an edge or two from the ethereal trio sound that always floats slightly above things, with its head in the clouds, but also in grounding it. A music that is quite tangible, just like the Girls & Boys next door.

So the second joint album of the quartet goes one door further. After all, even in Lockdown times they often rehearsed together, played numerous concerts and traveled a lot, which now culminates in an even more intense interaction. Although the quartet's debut was already a grassroots affair - after all, all members contributed their own pieces to the record - the distribution of tasks is now even more open. Fixed roles? There are none.

From epic flow to highly complex structures, transparent only to household members, through which the saxophone invites to a kind of exploratory walk, to hypnotic, afrobeatsque grooves and including the cover piece characteristic of Hülsmann, as always arranged with huge respect for the original: the award-winning quartet of the pianist and composer - right for the first album "Not Far From Here" there was the German Jazz Award for the best instrumental album (national) in 2021 - also reaches the next level with the successor "The Next Door".

Julia Hülsmann, born in Bonn in 1968, has been playing the piano since the age of eleven. She formed her first band at the age of sixteen. Today she teaches at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Hanover University of Music and Drama. Although she is primarily focused on her work with her own trio with Marc Muellbauer and Heinrich Köbberling, Julia Hülsmann also finds time for other projects. She has been in contact with the Bundesjugendjazzorchester (BuJazzO) since 1992, for which she last arranged a suite she wrote herself in 2009. In the same year, she recorded the album "Fasil" with guitarist Marc Sinan for ECM. She also accompanied the singer Céline Rudolph on her project "Lisboa - Maputo - Berlin" in 2006.

Uli Kempendorff studied saxophone and improvisation at the HfM "Hanns Eisler" Berlin and in New York at City College. Among them are five of his own productions with "Field" and Yellow Bird. In addition to his own projects "Field" (since 2018 with Christopher Dell, Peter Bruun and Jonas Westergaard) and "Yellow Bird" (a modern-roots band with former Lucia Cadotsch, Manon Kahle and Ronny Graupe), Uli Kempendorff is and was active in groups with, among others. Marc Muellbauer was born in London in 1968, but has lived in Germany since the age of three. After studying at the Folkwang University, he moved to Berlin in 1996 to continue his studies with Michael Wolf at the University of the Arts. There he founded his nine-piece band Kaleidoscope in 2000. Muellbauer has a wide range of musical backgrounds, from jazz to contemporary classical music. He has been a lecturer in double bass at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin since 1998.

Heinrich Köbberling, born in 1967 in Bad Arolsen, Hesse, studied in Hamburg and at the New School in New York. He has worked with Aki Takase, Richie Beirach, Gary Peacock and Ernie Watts, among others, and has been involved in the recording of around 50 jazz albums. In 1997, he recorded his only album to date as a leader with bassist Marc Johnson and guitarist Ben Monder under the title "Pisces". Today, Köbberling is also a member of the post-techno/house band 8doogymoto and teaches drums at the University of Music in Leipzig.
