Mit John Lee Hooker Jr.  kommt ein großartiger Top-Act des Chicago-Blues nach fünf Jahren Europa-Abstinenz endlich wieder auf Tour auf den alten Kontinent. Noch dazu hat er mit „Testify“ ein brandneues Album im Gepäck. Nach der umjubelten und vieler Orts ausverkauften Deutschland-Tour 2017, kommt der Blues-, Soul- und Gospelsänger nun im Rahmen der Testify-Europa-Tour 2022 erneut nach Deutschland. Der mittlerweile auch schon 70-jährige Sohn von Blues-Legende John Lee Hooker, selbst 3-fach-nominierter Grammy Award Künstler (2005, 2009 und ganz aktuell auch für 2022), sowie Gewinner vieler weiterer Auszeichnungen (u.a. The California Music Award for Best Traditional Artist in 2004, The Esteemed W.C. Handy Award in 2004 und The Bay Area Music Chapter for Come Back Artist of the Year), kommt mit vielen neuen Songs im Gepäck, aber natürlich auch den altbekannten Hooker-Songs (eigene und die seines berühmten Vaters) und einigen Blues-Standards. Die 5-köpfige Band gehört derzeit zum Besten, was in Sachen Blues & Roots international geboten wird.

Kein Wunder, dass die Rolling Stones höchst persönlich bei ihrer letzten Europa-Tour John Lee Hooker Jr. als Special Guest zu ihrem einzigen Konzert in Österreich geladen haben. Am 16.09.2017 holten Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood und Charlie Watts in Spielberg auf dem Red Bull Ring, wie einst den Vater John Lee Hooker, nun den Junior zu sich auf die Bühne. Zusammen mit seinem großartigen Gitarristen Jeffrey James konnte dabei Mr. Hooker Junior die rund 100.000 Besucher restlos begeistern, was weltweit für große Anerkennung sorgte.

 John Lee Hooker Jr. entstammt der musikalisch hochbegabten Sippe aus Detroit, die vom legendären Großvater Will Moore über den berühmten Vater John Lee Hooker („The Healer“, „Boom Boom“) bis hin zu den erfolgreichen Geschwistern Zakiya und Robert sowie Cousin Archie reicht. Bereits mit acht Jahren trat er im Radio auf und wusste, dass er den selben Weg wie sein Vater gehen würde. Mit 16 stand er auf der Bühne des Fox-Theaters in Detroit und kaum 18 Jahre alt erschien seine erste Platte bei ABC Records. Anschließend ging es in die große amerikanische Welt hinaus, von Alaska bis New Orleans wurde John Jr. bei allen bedeutenden Bluesfestivals gefeiert. Er  spielte mit den besten der arrivierten Blueslegenden wie Bo Diddley, Charlie Musselwhite, Luther Tucker, Deacon Jones, Elvin Bishop und natürlich mit seinem Dad John Lee Hooker und der Coast To Coast Blues Band, bei der er häufig der Star war.

In seinen Songs ist oft ein gehöriger Schuss bissiger Sozialkritik zu hören und das erinnert an Johnny Guitar Watson. Jener hatte einen großen Einfluss auf John Junior‘s Musik, ebenso wie Big Mama Thornton, Jimmy Reed, Jimi Hendrix und die beiden Kings, B.B. und Albert. Um seine eigene Stimme zu finden vermied er es, den großen Vater John Lee zu imitieren.John Jr. beschreibt das Rezept für seine Musik mit „zwei Teile R&B, ein Teil Jazz und ein fetter Teil 'down home blues' ". Damit fesselt er sein Publikum, dass er häufig animiert aktiv mitzusingen und zu tanzen und für das er ebenso die Bühne verlässt, um mit zu tanzen.

 Aktuell präsentiert John Lee Hooker Jr. mit seiner großartig besetzten Band seine brandneue CD „Testify”. Ein Mix aus traditionellen Blues und Gospelklängen aus eigener Feder, welche dem Künstler erneut zwei Nominierungen beim „Blues Blast Music Awards“ einbrachte. Das wichtigste Blues Musik Magazin in ganz Nordamerika nominierte ihn im Frühjahr 2020 als „besten traditionellen Blues Sänger“ und „Testify“ als „bestes Blues Album“.

Die Konzerte sind geprägt sind von Blues, Gospel und Soul, wobei der Meister bei seinen „Predigen“ nichts von seinem sozialkritischen Biss verloren hat. Aber das Publikum in Wallungen und zum Tanzen zu bringen, steht für ihn natürlich nach wie vor an vorderster Stelle, so wie er es einst selbst als kleiner Junge in der Kirche seiner Gemeinde gelernt hat.

With John Lee Hooker Jr., a great top act of Chicago blues is finally coming back on tour to the old continent after five years of absence from Europe. What's more, he has a brand new album, "Testify", in his luggage. After the acclaimed and in many places sold-out German tour in 2017, the blues, soul and gospel singer is now coming to Germany again as part of the Testify European Tour 2022. The 70-year-old son of blues legend John Lee Hooker, himself a 3-time Grammy Award nominee (2005, 2009 and currently also for 2022), as well as winner of many other awards (including The California Music Award for Best Traditional Artist in 2004, The Esteemed W.C. Handy Award in 2004 and The Bay Area Music Chapter for Come Back Artist of the Year), comes with many new songs in his luggage, but of course also the well-known Hooker songs (his own and those of his famous father) and some blues standards. The 5-piece band is currently one of the best that is offered internationally in terms of blues & roots.

No wonder that the Rolling Stones themselves invited John Lee Hooker Jr. as special guest on their last European tour to their only concert in Austria.  John Lee Hooker Jr. comes from the musically highly talented clan from Detroit, ranging from the legendary grandfather Will Moore to the famous father John Lee Hooker ("The Healer", "Boom Boom") to the successful siblings Zakiya and Robert as well as cousin Archie. He was already performing on the radio at the age of eight and knew that he would follow the same path as his father. At 16, he was on stage at the Fox Theater in Detroit and barely 18 years old, his first record was released on ABC Records. After that he went out into the great American world, from Alaska to New Orleans John Jr. was celebrated at all the major blues festivals. He played with the best of the established blues legends like Bo Diddley, Charlie Musselwhite, Luther Tucker, Deacon Jones, Elvin Bishop and of course with his dad John Lee Hooker and the Coast To Coast Blues Band, where he was often the star.

In his songs there is often a good shot of biting social criticism and that reminds of Johnny Guitar Watson. The latter had a great influence on John Junior's music, as did Big Mama Thornton, Jimmy Reed, Jimi Hendrix and the two Kings, B.B. and Albert. To find his own voice he avoided imitating the great father John Lee.John Jr. describes the recipe for his music as "two parts R&B, one part jazz and one fat part 'down home blues' ". With this he captivates his audience, which he often animates to actively sing and dance along and for which he also leaves the stage to dance along.

 Currently John Lee Hooker Jr. presents with his great band his brand new CD "Testify". A mix of traditional blues and gospel sounds from his own pen, which again brought the artist two nominations at the "Blues Blast Music Awards". The most important blues music magazine in all of North America nominated him as "best traditional blues singer" and "Testify" as "best blues album" in spring 2020.

The concerts are characterized by blues, gospel and soul, and the master has lost none of his socially critical bite in his "sermons". But getting the audience moving and dancing is of course still his top priority, just as he once learned to do himself as a little boy in the church of his congregation.
