Auf ihrem Debutalbum „tightrope dancer“ (2023) gehen die beiden Asunahmemusiker eine faszinierende Symbiose ein. Der rhythmische und harmonische Reichtum brasilianischer Musik prägt ihren Sound ebenso wie feinsinniges Zusammenspiel und Intimität in der Improvisation.
In Jahren des Zusammenspiels und zahlreichen internationalen Tourneen mit Marianas „Sexteto Universal“ hat sich zwischen beiden eine Freundschaft und Vertrautheit entwickelt, die im Duo (gegründet 2020) deutlich hörbar ist. Zwarg und von Ballestrem komponieren gemeinsam für das Projekt und haben durch die Verschmelzung von Einflüssen ihrer beiden Welten eine einzigartige Sprache entwickelt. Ihre Musik haben sie bereits in zahlreichen Ländern Europas sowie in Brasilien vorgestellt.

Mariana Zwarg wurde 1980 in Rio de Janeiro in eine Musikerfamilie geboren. Ihr Patenonkel ist der legendäre Hermeto Pascoal, in dessen Band ihr Vater seit 45 Jahren spielt. Die täglichen Proben der Band prägten Marianas musikalische Entwicklung von frühester Kindheit an.
Die Flötistin begann ihre Karriere in den 2000er Jahren in der Band ihres Vaters, mit der sie in ganz Lateinamerika und Europa tourte. Mit ihrem 2016 gegründeten „Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal“ profilierte sie sich international als Komponistin und Bandleaderin und veröffentlichte 2019 das hochgelobte Album „Nascentes“.

On their debut album "tightrope dancer" (2023), Mariana Zwarg, a flutist from Rio de Janeiro, and the Berlin pianist Johannes von Ballestrem create a fascinating symbiosis. The rhythmic and harmonic richness of Brazilian music influences their sound, as well as subtle interplay and intimacy in improvisation.
Through years of collaboration and numerous international tours with Mariana's "Sexteto Universal," a friendship and familiarity have developed between them, evident in the duo founded in 2020. Zwarg and von Ballestrem compose together for the project, creating a unique language through the fusion of influences from their respective worlds. They have already presented their music in various European countries and Brazil.

Mariana Zwarg was born in 1980 into a musical family in Rio de Janeiro. Her godfather is the legendary Hermeto Pascoal, in whose band her father has been playing for 45 years. The daily rehearsals of the band shaped Mariana's musical development from early childhood. The flutist began her career in the 2000s in her father's band, touring throughout Latin America and Europe. With her "Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal," founded in 2016, she established herself internationally as a composer and bandleader, releasing the highly acclaimed album "Nascentes" in 2019.

Johannes von Ballestrem, born in 1990 in Bonn, is a pianist who impresses with stylistic diversity and various activities. He studied, among others, with Michael Wollny and has performed as a well-regarded sideman worldwide. In New Orleans, he delved into the early forms of jazz, and through collaboration with Mariana Zwarg, he discovered a love for Brazilian music. He has played with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nils Landgren, and Norma Winstone. His collaboration with the violinist Daniel Hope brought him as a soloist to concert halls such as Tonhalle Zurich, Konzerthaus Berlin, and the Elbphilharmonie.
