Gerald Clayton sucht in jeder Note, die er spielt, nach ehrlichem Ausdruck. Mit harmonischer Neugier und kritischem Bewusstsein entwickelt er musikalische Geschichten, die sich als Ergebnis einer bewussten Suche und zufälliger Entdeckungen entfalten. Der vierfach GRAMMY-nominierte Pianist/Komponist begann seine musikalische Reise an der renommierten Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, wo er 2002 den Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award erhielt. Nach einem Jahr intensiven Studiums bei NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron an der Manhattan School of Music schloss er sein Studium mit einem Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance an der USC Thornton School of Music unter der Leitung von Klavierikone Billy Childs ab. Clayton gewann 2006 den zweiten Platz beim Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition.

Die Expansion ist Teil von Claytons künstlerischer Identität geworden. Seine Musik zelebriert die inhärenten Unterschiede in den musikalischen Perspektiven, die eine echte künstlerische Synergie fördern. Dank dieser Sensibilität konnte er mit so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Kendrick Scott, John Scofield Ben Williams, Terell Stafford & Dick Oatts, Michael Rodriguez, Terri Lyne Carrington, Avishai Cohen, Peter Bernstein und dem Clayton Brothers Quintet auftreten und Aufnahmen machen. Seit Anfang 2013 ist Clayton auch mit der Saxophonlegende Charles Lloyd auf Tournee und bei Aufnahmen.

2016 ist er zum zweiten Mal musikalischer Leiter des Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, einem Projekt, bei dem sein Trio zusammen mit Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard und Raul Midón auftritt.

Claytons Diskografie als Leader spiegelt seine Entwicklung als Künstler wider. Sein Debütalbum Two Shade (ArtistShare) brachte ihm 2010 eine GRAMMY-Nominierung für das beste improvisierte Jazz-Solo für sein Arrangement von Cole Porters "All of You" ein. "Battle Circle", seine Komposition, die auf der Aufnahme The New Song and Dance (ArtistShare) der Clayton Brothers zu hören ist, erhielt 2011 eine GRAMMY-Nominierung für die beste Jazz-Instrumentalkomposition. Für Bond: The Paris Sessions (Concord) und Life Forum (Concord), sein zweites und drittes Album, erhielt er 2012 und 2013 GRAMMY-Nominierungen für das beste Jazz-Instrumentalalbum.

Für Clayton ist es eine Selbstverständlichkeit, die Wahrheit in der Klangvorstellung eines jeden Augenblicks einzufangen. Als Sohn des beliebten Bassisten und Komponisten John Clayton genoss er schon früh eine familiäre Ausbildung. Die Zeitschrift Jazz Magazine bezeichnet ihn als "den Schlagzeuger seiner Generation", und in der Tat ist Gregory Hutchinson einer der meistbeachteten Musiker unserer Zeit. Sein meisterhaftes Timing und der Ausdruck von Rhythmen sind der Kern seines persönlichen Stils. Er ist der Schlagzeuger eines Musikers, der fest in der Jazztradition verwurzelt ist und in der Lage ist, sich allen Musikstilen mit höchster Präzision und Fantasie zu nähern, indem er Kompositionen mit seinem natürlichen Gefühl und seiner umwerfenden Innovation ausschmückt. Gerald Clayton searches for honest expression in every note he plays. With harmonic curiosity and critical awareness, he develops musical narratives that unfold as a result of both deliberate searching and chance uncovering. The four-time GRAMMY-nominated pianist/composer formally began his musical journey at the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, where he received the 2002 Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award. Continuing his scholarly pursuits, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance at USC’s Thornton School of Music under the instruction of piano icon Billy Childs, after a year of intensive study with NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron at The Manhattan School of Music. Clayton won second place in the 2006 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition.

Inclusive sensibilities have allowed him to perform and record with such distinctive artists as Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Dianne Reeves, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Kendrick Scott, John Scofield Ben Williams, Terell Stafford & Dick Oatts, Michael Rodriguez, Terri Lyne Carrington, Avishai Cohen, Peter Bernstein and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. Clayton also has enjoyed an extended association since early 2013, touring and recording with saxophone legend Charles Lloyd.

2016 marks his second year as Musical Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour, a project that has featured his trio along with Ravi Coltrane, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard and Raul Midón on guitar and vocals.

Clayton’s discography as a leader reflects his evolution as an artist. Jazz Magazine describes him as “the drummer of his generation” and indeed, Gregory Hutchinson is one of the most highly respected musicians of our time. His mastery of timing and expression of rhythms is at the core of his personal style. He is a musician’s drummer, soundly rooted in the jazz tradition he is able to approach all styles of music with supreme accuracy and imagination, decorating compositions with his natural feel and mind blowing innovation. Dianne Reeves describes him as “Pure Genius.” Gary Giddins described his drum work as “Elegant” and more “like dancing.” Joshua Redman describes him as “Inspired.” To Hutch, his goal is to play the drums like Charlie Parker plays the horns, “I want to sing on the drums the way he sings on the horn.”

After the completion of Thelonious Monk Institute in 2007, Sanders moved to New York City, where he eventually emerged as an integral part of the thriving New York jazz scene. In 2017, Sanders travels regularly with his ensemble, "Joe Sanders' Infinity", and as a sideman with Kendrick Scott Oracle, Gerald Clayton Trio and Ben Wendel Quartet. In September 2017, Joe released his second album as leader, ‘Humanity'.

Joe travels more than 100,000 miles performing in 18 countries every year.
