Emmet Cohen ist einer der absoluten Stars der Jazzwelt. Er wird von seinen musikalischen PartnerInnen, KritikerInnen und vor allem vom Publikum geliebt und gefeiert, egal ob auf den renommiertesten Festivals, in den angesagtesten Clubs oder vor Millionenpublikum auf YouTube. Er ist einer der Fackelträger der Jazztradition, die bei ihm so frisch und lebendig klingt wie es nur ganz selten zu hören ist. Nach seinem ausverkauften Trio-Konzert im Mai freuen wir uns Emmet für gleich zwei Abende gewonnen zu haben. Mit dabei ist erneut sein perfekt eingespieltes Trio mit Bassist Phil Norris und Drummer Kyle Poole, sowie als Special Guest einer der neuen Rising Stars der Jazzwelt, die fantastische Ekep Nkwelle!

Emmet Cohen begann mit drei Jahren Klavier zu spielen; er hatte dann eine klassische Piano-Ausbildung nach der Suzuki-Methode. Er wuchs in Miami and Montclair, New Jersey auf; er studierte schließlich an der University of Miami (Bachelor) und an der Manhattan School of Music, an der er den Masterabschluss erwarb. 2010 nahm er mit Greg Gisbert, Joe Sanders und Rodney Green sein Debütalbum In the Element auf; weitere Aufnahmen entstanden in den 2010er-Jahren mit Eric Miller (Trust Your Intuition), Brian Lynch, Veronica Swift und Herlin Riley (New Direction). 2011 war er Finalist beim Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. 2011 und 2015 war er Finalist bei den American Pianists Awards, die er schliesslich 2019 gewann.

Unter eigenem Namen spielte Cohen unter dem Titel Masters Legacy Series zwei Alben ein, die sich mit der Geschichte des Jazz beschäftigen. Mitwirkende Musiker waren die Jazzveteranen Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, George Coleman, ferner Yasushi Nakamura und Evan Sherman. Während der Corona-Pandemie begann Cohen Konzerte im Stile der Rent-Partys der 30er Jahre aus seinem Wohnzimmer zu streamen. Die Videos “Live from Emmets Place” wurden millionenfach angeklickt und featuren die prominentesten und prägendsten MusikerInnen der Gegenwart wie Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Randy Brecker, Seamus Blake, Samara Joy, Christian McBride und viele, viele mehr.

Ekep Nkwelle ist einer der neuen Sterne am Jazzhimmel. Die erst 25 Jahre alte Sängerin machte schon während der ersten Schritte auf ihrer Reise in die Jazzwelt an der berühmten Duke Ellinton School of the Arts und der Juilliard School auf sich aufmerksam und wurde von niemand geringeren als Wynton Marsalis gefördert. Sie teilte die Bühne mit dem Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Russell Malone, Peter Washington oder der großen Dee Dee Bridgewater, aber auch mit dem weltberühmten klassischen Virtuosen Lang Lang. In den kommenden Jahren wird ihre kraftvolle und außergewöhnlich ausdrucksstarke Stimme noch äußerst oft zu hören sein!

Der Bassist Philip Norris begann seiner Kindheit Klavier und Horn zu spielen, entdeckte dann aber mit 13 seine Liebe zum Bass. Er studierte an der berühmten Juilliard School of Music und ist inzwischen fester Bestandteil der regen New Yorker Jazzszene. Er spielte mit Koryphäen wie Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau und noch vielen mehr.

Kyle Poole, geboren 1994 ist trotz seines noch jungen Alters einer der gefragtesten und versiertesten Drummer der New Yorker Jazzszene. Er kam 2011 an den Big Apple und spielte dort seitdem mit MusikerInnen wie Jeremy Pelt, Joel Frahm, Peter Bernstein und Veronica Swift. Mit Wynton Marsalis gastierte er beim Jazzfestival in Marciac und spielte mit Emmet Cohens Trio Welttourneen. Desweiteren war er Semifinalist bei der Thelonious-Monk-Jazz-Competition, dem renommiertesten Jazz-Wettbewerb der Welt. Von diesem Youngster wird man in den kommenden Jahren noch einiges zu hören bekommen.

Emmet Cohen is one of the absolute stars of the jazz world. He is loved and celebrated by his musical partners, critics and, above all, the public, whether at the most prestigious festivals, in the hottest clubs or in front of millions on YouTube. He is one of the torchbearers of the jazz tradition, which sounds as fresh and lively as it rarely does. After his sold-out trio concert in May, we are delighted to have Emmet back for two evenings. He will be joined by his perfectly rehearsed trio with bassist Phil Norris and drummer Kyle Poole, as well as one of the new rising stars of the jazz world, the fantastic Ekep Nkwelle!

Emmet Cohen began playing the piano at the age of three; he then had classical piano training according to the Suzuki method. Cohen recorded two albums under his own name under the title Masters Legacy Series, which deal with the history of jazz. The musicians involved were jazz veterans Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Yasushi Nakamura and Evan Sherman. During the coronavirus pandemic, Cohen began streaming concerts from his living room in the style of the rent parties of the 1930s. The "Live from Emmet's Place" videos have been clicked on millions of times and feature the most prominent and influential musicians of our time, such as Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Randy Brecker, Seamus Blake, Samara Joy, Christian McBride and many, many more.

Ekep Nkwelle is one of the new stars on the jazz scene. The singer, who is only 25 years old, already attracted attention during her first steps on her journey into the jazz world at the famous Duke Ellinton School of the Arts and the Juilliard School and was supported by none other than Wynton Marsalis. She has shared the stage with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Russell Malone, Peter Washington or the great Dee Dee Bridgewater, but also with the world-famous classical virtuoso Lang Lang. Her powerful and extraordinarily expressive voice will be heard many more times in the years to come!

Bassist Philip Norris began playing the piano and horn as a child, but discovered his love for the bass at the age of 13. He studied at the famous Juilliard School of Music and is now an integral part of the lively New York jazz scene. He has played with luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau and many more.

Kyle Poole, born in 1994, is one of the most sought-after and accomplished drummers on the New York jazz scene despite his young age. He came to the Big Apple in 2011 and has since played with musicians such as Jeremy Pelt, Joel Frahm, Peter Bernstein and Veronica Swift. He performed with Wynton Marsalis at the Marciac Jazz Festival and toured the world with Emmet Cohen's trio. He was also a semi-finalist in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition, the most prestigious jazz competition in the world. We will be hearing a lot more from this youngster in the coming years.
