Duke Ellington's musical contribution and influence was and is simply incomparable. Thousands of songs sprang from his genius (the exact number is unknown), hundreds of which became standards. As an arranger, Ellington was particularly innovative, writing for his very individual players rather than an anonymous horn section, and not content to always play his songs the same way, he constantly rearranged them; "Mood Indigo" sounded different in 1933 than it did in 1953 or 1973. On this evening, a quartet led by one of Berlin’s most respected jazz pianists Declan Forde will perform some of their favourite compositions from the Ellington songbook.

Declan Forde is a pianist from Scotland and has been living in Berlin since 2014. In recent years, Forde has developed into a pianist in who covers a wide range of musical situations. From early jazz with Igor Spallati's Musicomaniacs, to performing the music of Duke Ellington with American bassist Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Woody Allen, etc.); original music with James Banner's Usine to free improvised music with artists such as Jeff Williams, John Hollenbeck, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski, Cansu Tanrikulu, Rudi Mahal, Jan Roder and Michael Griener. Forde also performs solo and has been invited by the Berliner Festspiele to perform as part of American artist Rashid Johnson's installation "Antoine's Organ" at Berlin's Gropius Bau from July to December 2019.

Tobias Delius (1964, Oxford, UK) began playing tenor saxophone in the Ruhr area. He then developed his own personal style in Mexico City and Amsterdam. Today he lives in Berlin. In addition to leading his highly acclaimed 4tet with Han Bennink, Joe Williamson & Tristan Honsinger, which has been in existence for more than 30 years and has released 4 CDs on the ICP label, his improvisations can be heard in a wide variety of contexts with musicians from around the world.

Jordan Dinsdale is a young improvising percussionist from the United Kingdom living in Berlin. He graduated from Leeds College of Music (UK) in 2017 with the Peter Roberts Memorial Prize and now works across Europe and beyond in a variety of musical contexts. Jordan has a connection to New York and visits the city frequently to study and perform. Studying with the renowned Jimmy Cobb and Jimmy Wormworth, Jordan received and continues to receive a very special education in Black American Music. Notable musicians Jordan has played with include Mike Moreno, Chris Cheek, Mike Kanan, Judy Niemack, Tardo Hammer and Yasushi Nakamura. As of 2022, Jordan is a member of Meg Stewart/Damaged Goods, a group that travels the world combining dance, music and improvisation.

Duke Ellingtons musikalischer Beitrag und Einfluss war und ist einfach unvergleichlich. Tausende von Songs entsprangen seinem Genius (die genaue Zahl ist nicht bekannt), von denen Hunderte zu Standards wurden. Als Arrangeur war Ellington besonders innovativ, er schrieb für seine sehr individuellen Spieler und nicht für eine anonyme Bläsersektion, und da er sich nicht damit zufrieden gab, seine Songs immer auf die gleiche Weise zu spielen, arrangierte er sie ständig neu; "Mood Indigo" klang 1933 anders als 1953 oder 1973. Als Pianist war Duke Ellington ursprünglich ein exzellenter Stride-Spieler, der sich den Respekt von Giganten wie James P. Johnson, Fats Waller und seinem Haupteinfluss Willie "The Lion" Smith verschaffte. Ellington schuf Kunst auf höchstem Niveau. Er wird oft mit den großen europäischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts verglichen. Ein solcher Vergleich ist jedoch fast irrelevant, da Ellingtons Musik von einer Genialität herrührt, die jenseits der Reichweite europäischer musikalischer Werte liegt.

An diesem Abend spielt eine Band unter der Leitung des Pianisten Declan Forde einige ihrer Lieblingskompositionen aus dem Ellington-Songbook.

Forde tritt auch solo auf und wurde von den Berliner Festspielen eingeladen, im Rahmen der Installation "Antoine's Organ" des amerikanischen Künstlers Rashid Johnson im Berliner Gropius Bau von Juli bis Dezember 2019 aufzutreten.

Ab 2022 ist Jordan Mitglied von Meg Stewart/Damaged Goods, einer Gruppe, die durch die Welt reist und Tanz, Musik und Improvisation miteinander verbindet.
