Wer an Kuba denkt, der denkt an alte Straßenkreuzer, eiskalten Daiquiri, fesche Salsatänzer und mitreißenden Live-Jazz mit Seele und Schmiss. Das Cuban Heartbeat Orchestra bringt die heissblütige und quirlig-lebendige Atmosphäre eines kubanischen Jazzclubs direkt in den Zigzag – kein Wunder, dass das Cuban Heartbeat Orchestra inzwischen als hauseigene Latin-Band des Zigzag gehandelt wird, denn es zelebriert den traditionellen kubanischen Son und Latin Jazz in modernen Arrangements.

Im Alter von 5 Jahren gab Olvido Ruiz ihr Debüt als Sängerin im kubanischen Fernsehen, begleitet von ihrer Mutter, der bekannten kubanische Diva Jaqueline Castellanos, „La Dama del son“. Mit 8 Jahren begann ihre musikalische Ausbildung an der nationalen Kunst- und Musikakademie „Paulita Conception“ in den Fächern Geige, Klavier und Chorleitung (Gesang). Danach setzte sie ihr Studium am Konservatorium „Amadeo Roldan“ in Havanna fort. Als Leadsängerin und jüngstes Mitglied begann sie ihre Karriere schon als 16-Jährige in der weltweit bekannten Frauen-Band „Azucar“. Die Bandbreite ihrer Auftritte bewegt sich von nationalen und internationalen Salsa Festivals bis hin zu Tourneen durch Mexico, Brasilien, Bahamas, Martinique, etc. Ihre Erfolge dehnten sich aus bis hin zur Verleihung des Preises „Beliebteste Band Cubas“ des kubanischen Fernsehens.

Regis Molina ist ein Musiker und Komponist aus Havanna, Kuba, der derzeit in Berlin lebt. Er ist ein Multiinstrumentalist, der Alt- und Baritonsaxophon, Flöte, Klarinette und afrokubanische Perkussion spielt. Molinas Leidenschaft und Hingabe zur Musik haben ihm mehrere Auszeichnungen eingebracht, wie beispielsweise 2007 den Latin Grammy und ihn weltweit mit renommierten Musikern und Bands wie Till Brönner, Kurt Rosenwinkel oder Jeff “Tain” Watts auftreten lassen.

Daniel Stawinski – der vielgereiste Pianist und Arrangeur ist bekannt für sein energiegeladenes. rhythmisches Spiel, das sowohl im Jazz als auch in der kubanischen Musik wurzelt. Er tourte weltweit auf 4 Kontinenten mit dem Yilian Canizares Quintett und konzertierte u.a. mit Felipe Cabrera, Alune Wade, Irving Acao, Ray de la Paz, Tony Vega, Diego Pinera, Djeli Moussa Diawara. Schon 2005 wurde er mit dem Berliner Jazz&Blues Award ausgezeichnet.

Der kolumbianische Bassist Checho Gomez ist in Berlin aus der Latin- und Jazz Szene nicht wegzudenken. Man kennt ihn zum Beispiel als Musiker des Cuban Hartbeat Orchestra und der Band Conexion mit Mayelis Guyat. Ebenso spielte er schon vielbejubelte Auftritte mit dem vielfach ausgezeichneten Balkan Spirit Ensemble.

Robby Geerken ist ein absoluter Ausnahme-Perkussionist und Conga-Virtuose. Die Liste seiner musikalischen Partnerinnen und Partner ist lang: So spielte er beispielsweise mit Steve Swallow, Jose Luis Quintana „Changuito“, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim und Alex Sipiagin, aber auch mit anerkannten kubanischen Folkloregruppen, wie dem Conjunto Folclórico Nacional de Cuba, Clave y Guaguancó und Yoruba Andabo.

Javier Reyes bereichert die Berliner Jazzszene seit vielen Jahren mit den unwiderstehlichen Grooves seiner Heimat Kolumbien und steht als Schlagzeuger beispielhaft für die faszinierende Verbindung karibischer Rhythmen mit dem kreativen Jazz Spirit. Er spielte u.a. mit Samuel Torres, Peter Weniger, David Gilmore, Marcus Belgrave, Kelvin Sholar, Marie Séférian...

When you think of Cuba, you think of old street cruisers, ice-cold daiquiris, dashing salsa dancers and rousing live jazz with soul and panache. The Cuban Heartbeat Orchestra brings the hot-blooded and lively atmosphere of a Cuban jazz club directly to the Zigzag - no wonder that the Cuban Heartbeat Orchestra is now considered the Zigzag's own Latin band, because it celebrates traditional Cuban son and Latin jazz in modern arrangements.

At the age of 5, Olvido Ruiz made her debut as a singer on Cuban television, accompanied by her mother, the well-known Cuban diva Jaqueline Castellanos, "La Dama del son". At the age of 8, she began her musical education at the National Academy of Art and Music "Paulita Conception" in violin, piano and choral conducting (singing). She then continued her studies at the Conservatory "Amadeo Roldan" in Havana.
