Cécile McLorin Salvant ist eine US-amerikanische Jazz-Sängerin und Komponistin. Sie gehört zu den bedeutendsten und prägendsten Stimmen ihrer Generation und verfügt über eine beeindruckende stilistische Bandbreite, ein charismatisches Auftreten und ist wie kaum eine Zweite in der Lage, jedem Ton und jedem Laut eine Bedeutung zu geben, was nicht zuletzt an ihrer atemberaubend vielseitigen Stimme liegt, die sie bis zur Perfektion beherrscht. Geboren wurde Salvant in Miami als Tochter eines Haitianers und einer Französin. Sie begann schon mit 5 mit dem Klavierspiel und begann im Chor zu singen und erhielt eine klassische Gesangsausbildung. Ihr Interesse zum Jazz wurde im Laufe ihrer Teenagerjahre geweckt und schon bald verband sie ihre Einflüsse wie sie selbst sagt zu einer Mischung aus “Jazz und Blues, mit Elementen aus Folk und Musical”. 2010 gewann sie die Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, den renommiertesten Jazzwettbewerb der Welt. Von da an begann ihr steiler Aufstieg an die Spitze der Jazzwelt; Kritiker wie Publikum begeistert sie nun schon seit Jahren. Sie arbeitete mit einigen der der bedeutendsten Künstlern der Jazzwelt zusammen, darunter auch Wynton Marsalis, der über sie sagte: “Man bekommt so eine Stimme wohl nur einmal in einer Generation zu hören!”
Ihre Alben For One to Love, Dreams and Daggers und das in Zusammenarbeit mit Sullivan Fortner entstandene Duoalbum The Window wurden alle mit dem Grammy Award für das beste Jazz-Gesangsalbum ausgezeichnet. Salvant spricht und singt fließend Französisch und Englisch und vereint neben ihren stimmlichen Einflüssen aus Jazz, klassischer Musik, dem Musical auch literarische Themen, wie zuletzt auf ihrem 2023 erschienenen Album Mélusine.

Sullivan Fortner ist ohne Zweifel einer der kreativsten und umtriebigsten Pianisten seiner Generation. Seine virtuosen pianistischen Fähigkeiten sind dabei nie Selbstzweck; sein nie zu enden scheinender Ideenreichtum beeindruckt Kritiker wie Publikum gleichermaßen. In den letzten zehn Jahren hat Fortner seine tief verwurzelten Talente als Pianist, Komponist, Bandleader und kompromissloser Individualist entfaltet. Der mit dem GRAMMY Award ausgezeichnete Künstler aus New Orleans hat neben seiner Arbeit mit McLorin Salvant als Solokünstler mehrere von der Kritik hochgelobte Alben herausgebracht und er steht für Jazzverhältnisse erst am Anfang seiner Karriere. Der in New York lebende Fortner wurde in mehreren Kategorien des DownBeat Critics Poll ausgezeichnet und gewann den ersten Platz in den Kategorien Rising Star Piano und Rising Star Jazz Artist. Neben der Zusammenarbeit mit so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Diane Reeves, Etienne Charles und John Scofield hat Fortner ebenfalls häufig und lange mit Ambrose Akinmusire, Dee Dee Bridgewate, Peter Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, Fred Hersch und dem verstorbenen Roy Hargrove zusammengearbeitet. Indem er verschiedene Elemente aus unterschiedlichen Epochen zusammenführt, bewahrt Fortner die Tradition und entwickelt den Sound weiter. Er sucht nach Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen musikalischen Stilen, die gleichzeitig tief gefühlvoll und wild erfinderisch sind. Sowohl seine Werke als auch seine Erkenntnisse wurden in kulturell bedeutenden Publikationen von der New York Times bis zu The Root veröffentlicht. Cécile McLorin Salvant is an American jazz singer and composer. She is one of the most important and influential voices of her generation and has an impressive stylistic range, a charismatic presence and is able to give meaning to every note and every sound like no other, not least thanks to her breathtakingly versatile voice, which she has mastered to perfection. Salvant was born in Miami to a Haitian father and a French mother. She began playing the piano at the age of 5, started singing in a choir and received classical vocal training. Her interest in jazz was awakened during her teenage years and she soon combined her influences, as she says herself, into a mixture of "jazz and blues, with elements of folk and musical". In 2010, she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the most prestigious jazz competition in the world. From then on, her steep rise to the top of the jazz world began; she has been wowing critics and audiences alike for years now. She has worked with some of the most important artists in the jazz world, including Wynton Marsalis, who said of her: "You get a singer like this once in a generation!"
