Ein außergewöhnliches Duo, fest verbunden durch Liebe, Familie, Glauben, Kultur und Gemeinschaft.

Das sind die Dinge und Werte, die das Baylor Project feat. Jean and Marcus Baylor antreiben und definieren. Und natürlich das Herz und die Seele des Jazz, die diese außergewöhnliche Zusammenarbeit quasi durchdringt. Als Pastorenkinder sind die musikalischen Wurzeln von Marcus und Jean tief in der Kirche verankert, wo sie von frühester Jugend an Jazz, Gospel, Blues und Soul begegneten. Die beiden Ausnahmekünstler gehören zu den besten und erfolgreichsten der Jazzwelt und im Duo sind ihre dynamischen Auftritte ein wahres Erlebnis. Gefühlvoll bis ins Mark führen die Baylors durch einen Abend authentischster afroamerikanischer Musiktradition. Sie spielen Eigenkompositionen und neue Arrangements klassischer Stücke, tragen Balladen mit viel Anmut und Eleganz vor, regen in Spirituals zum Innehalten an und verführen das Publikum mit treibendem Swing vielleicht sogar zum Mitklatschen. Sie sind sympathisch, sie sind virtuos, und aus diesen Gründen ziehen sie volle Häuser und ein ausverkauftes Publikum in ihren Bann.

Ihre Debüt-CD "The Journey" erhielt im Jahr 2018 zwei GRAMMY®-Nominierungen in den Kategorien Best Jazz Vocal Album und Best Traditional R&B Performance. Zwei Jahre später, in einem der schwierigsten Jahre der jüngeren Geschichte, veröffentlichten The Baylors 2020 ihre Single "Sit On Down", die eine dritte GRAMMY®-Nominierung für die beste traditionelle R&B-Performance erhielt und den Platz des Baylor Projects in den höchsten Sphären der Jazzwelt zementierte. Ihr zweites Album "Generations", das 2021 erschien, brachte dem Duo seine 4. GRAMMY®-Nominierung für das beste Jazz-Gesangsalbum ein. "Generations" wurde zur Nummer 1 der JazzWeek-Radiocharts und der Song "We Swing (The Cypher)" wurde von NPR Music zu den 100 besten Songs des Jahres 2021 gewählt.

Jean Baylor, ein "Jersey Girl", kam während ihres Gesangsstudiums an der Temple University mit dem Jazz in Berührung, wo sie von Künstlern wie Carmen McCrae, Jimmy Scott und Shirley Horn stark beeinflusst wurde. Später machte sie sich einen Namen als eine Hälfte des mit Platin ausgezeichneten Duos Zhane'. Mit der Zeit entwickelte sich Jean auch zu einer versierten Komponistin, Arrangeurin, Produzentin und Bandleaderin. Sie war als Gastmusikerin bei Auftritten und Aufnahmen mit Künstlern wie den Yellowjackets, Kenny Garrett, Marcus Miller und dem legendären Bassisten Buster Williams zu hören. Ausgestattet mit einem agilen Mezzosopran, kombiniert Jean einen frischen und originellen Ansatz zur Phrasierung mit geschickter Improvisation, was zu einem Gesang von solcher stimmlichen Reinheit führt, dass sie die Seele umarmt.

Der aus St. Louis stammende Marcus Baylor ist weithin bekannt als ehemaliges Mitglied und Schlagzeuger des mit dem GRAMMY® Award ausgezeichneten Jazz-Quartetts Yellowjackets. Während seines Studiums an der New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music begann er, mit Cassandra Wilson zu touren und Aufnahmen zu machen, und arbeitete später mit Künstlern wie Kenny Garrett und John Scofield zusammen. Seitdem hat sich Marcus als Komponist, Arrangeur, Produzent und Bandleader einen Namen gemacht. Mit seinem natürlichen Gespür, der kreativen Nutzung des Raums und seiner innovativen Fähigkeit, eine Geschichte zu erzählen hört man in jeder Sekunde seines Spiels seine tiefe Musikalität, die einen unmittelbar in den Bann zieht.

Begleitet werden die beiden von einer fantastischen Band bestehend aus Top-Notch-Playern der US-Amerikanischen Szene:

Keith Loftis, einer der führenden Tenoristen der New Yorker Szene, der von Roy Hargrove über Kenny Barron bis Ray Charles jeden seiner Mitspieler begeistern konnte.

Terry Brewer, der Jeans Gesang und Keiths Saxophonspiel mit seinem umsichtigen und leichtfüßigen Pianospiel kongenial in Szene setzt

und Ameen Saleem, einen der Rising Stars der Szene, der als Bassist und Komponist tätig ist und für sein Debütalbum Musiker wie Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut und Gregory Hutchinson akquirieren konnte.

These are the things and values that drive and define The Baylor Project feat. Jean and Marcus Baylor. And of course, the heart and soul of jazz that virtually permeates this extraordinary collaboration. As pastors' kids, Marcus and Jean's musical roots are deeply rooted in the church, where they encountered jazz, gospel, blues and soul from an early age. The two exceptional artists are among the best and most successful in the jazz world, and as a duo their dynamic performances are a true experience. The Baylors lead the audience through an evening of authentic Afro-American music. They play their own compositions and new arrangements of classical pieces, perform ballads with much grace and elegance, encourage the audience to pause in spirituals and perhaps even seduce them to clap along with their driving swing. They are likeable, they are virtuosic, and for these reasons they captivate full houses and sold-out audiences.

Their debut CD "The Journey", released on their own label, Be A Light, topped the Billboard Jazz Chart at Number 8 in 2017 and a year later garnered 2 GRAMMY® Nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance. Two years later during one of the most challenging years in recent history, The Baylors released their single, “Sit On Down” in 2020 which earned a 3rd GRAMMY® Nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance, solidifying The Baylor Project as an undeniable force. Their second album, “Generations,” released in 2021 earned the duo its 4th GRAMMY® Nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. “Generations,” a cultural anthology rooted in everyday life experiences, becoming the #1 jazz vocal album on the JazzWeek radio charts and the standout song “We Swing (The Cypher)” was named among NPR Music’s 100 Best Songs of 2021.

Jean, a “Jersey Girl”, was introduced to jazz in college as a Vocal Performance Major at Temple University, where she was heavily influenced by artists such as Carmen McCrae, Jimmy Scott, and Shirley Horn. She subsequently made her mark as one-half of the platinum recording duo, Zhane´. In time, Jean grew into a composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. She has been a featured guest artist on performances and recordings with artists including Yellowjackets, Kenny Garrett, Marcus Miller and legendary bassist, Buster Williams. Well-equipped with an agile mezzo-soprano range, Jean combines a fresh, whimsical approach to phrasing with clever improvisation resulting in singing of such vocal purity that she embraces the soul.

Marcus, a St. Louis native, is widely recognized as the former member and drummer of the GRAMMY® Award winning jazz quartet, Yellowjackets. While attending The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, he began touring and recording with Cassandra Wilson and went on to work with artists including Kenny Garrett and John Scofield. Since then, Marcus has come into his own as a composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. With his natural feel, creative use of space and innovative ability to tell a story, his musicianship and improvisation are those of a seasoned musician.

The two are accompanied by a fantastic band consisting of top notch players of the US-American scene:

Terry Brewer, who congenially stages Jean's singing and Keith's saxophone playing with his circumspect and light-footed piano playing

and Ameen Saleem, one of the rising stars of the scene, who is active as a bassist and composer and was able to acquire musicians such as Roy Hargrove, Cyrus Chestnut and Gregory Hutchinson for his debut album.
