Ein seltenes Vergnügen im Zig Zag Jazz Club: Aurora Nealand, US-amerikanische Multiinstrumentalistin und Wahl-New-Yorkerin kommt nach Berlin und zollt der großen musikalischen Tradition ihrer Heimatstadt New Orleans Tribut - insbesondere der Musik von Sidney Bechet. Nealand wird von einer Band aus Berlinern sowie alten und neuen Freunden begleitet. Aurora Nealand gehört zu den außergewöhnlichsten und kreativsten MusikerInnen der heutigen Jazzszene, die den Balanceact zwischen Tradition, Kreativität und Avantgarde wagen und so große Musik von einzigartiger Individualität schaffen.

Aurora Nealand strebt danach, die Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Musik und Alltag auszuloten. Sie ist eine Klangkünstlerin und Multiinstrumentalistin (Saxophone, Akkordeon, Stimme), geboren, ebenso wie der Jazz in New Orleans. Ihr musikalisches Portfolio ist von einer schier grenzenlosen Breite gekennzeichnet: Sie ist die Leiterin von The Royal Roses, einer nicht-traditionellen Traditional-Jazz-Band, deren Ansatz auf der kollektiven Improvisation beruht, die sich von den Traditionen des frühen Jazz in New Orleans über die AACM bis hin zu Collage-Klangkunst und Musique Concrete erstreckt. Zu Nealands weiteren musikalischen Projekten gehören The Monocle Ensemble - ihr Originalmusikprojekt und Installationsensemble, redrawblak Trio, Instigation Orchestra, John Hollenbecks GEORGE und die Danger Dangers. 2019/2020 debütierte sie KindHumanKind- eine 90-minütige voll inszenierte Theatershow im Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, die auf ihrer Originalmusik basiert. Außerdem arbeitet regelmäßig als musikalische Vermittlerin mit Found Sound Nation zusammen - einer Organisation, die internationale musikalische Zusammenarbeit fördert, und ist seit 20 Jahren an der Walden School for Young Composers (als Lehrerin/Darstellerin) beteiligt. Nealand war auf nationalen und internationalen Festivals zu Gast, darunter das Montreal Jazz Festival, das Istanbul Jazz Festival, das Big Ears Festival, das Copenhagen Jazz Festival, das MPB Jazz Festival (Natal, Brasilien), das Lincoln Center, das Kennedy Center, Summerstage NYC und das New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Sie hat mit Pauline Oliveros, Jonathan Hart Makwaia, Preservation Hall Allstars, Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, James Singleton, David Torn, Arto Lindsey, Germaine Bazzle, John Boutte, Johnny Vidacovich und vielen anderen zusammengearbeitet.

Eldar Tsalikov zog 2011 nach ersten Studien in seiner Heimtar nach Berlin, wo er sein Studium am "Jazz-Institut Berlin" begann und die Klarinette zum Saxophon als zweites Instrument dazu nahm. 2018 schloss Eldar das Institut erfolgreich mit dem Bachelor-Abschluss als Instrumentalist sowie dem Master-Abschluss als Arrangeur und Komponist ab. Als geschickter und vielseitiger Musiker hat Eldar sein Wissen über Jazzmusik (und nicht nur das) erweitert und mit zahlreichen europäischen und westlichen Interpreten der verschiedenen Arten dieses Genres zusammengearbeitet: von den tiefgründigen traditionellen Stilen, wie "Hot Jazz" (oder "Trad Jazz") und Swing bis hin zu modernen Formen des Jazz und der experimentellen Musik (Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Elias Stemeseder, Manlio Maresca, "The HAF", Anna Webbers "Percussive Mechanics"). Mit diesen und vielen anderen Künstlern reiste Eldar durch verschiedene Länder und trat in weltweit anerkannten Veranstaltungsorten und Konzertsälen auf.

Declan Forde ist ein Pianist aus Schottland und lebt seit 2014 in Berlin. In den letzten Jahren hat sich Forde in Berlin zu einem unfassbar vielseitigen Pianisten entwickelt, der in so gut wie jedem musikalischen Kontext zuhause ist. Vom Early Jazz mit Igor Spallati's Musicomaniacs, über die Aufführung der Musik von Duke Ellington mit dem amerikanischen Bassisten Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Woody Allen, etc.); Originalmusik mit James Banner's Usine bis hin zu frei improvisierter Musik mit Künstlern wie Jeff Williams, John Hollenbeck, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski, Cansu Tanrikulu, Rudi Mahal, Jan Roder und Michael Griener. Forde tritt auch solo auf und wurde von den Berliner Festspielen eingeladen, im Rahmen der Installation "Antoine's Organ" des amerikanischen Künstlers Rashid Johnson im Berliner Gropius Bau von Juli bis Dezember 2019 aufzutreten. Außerhalb der Welt des Jazz und der improvisierten Musik tritt Forde seit über zehn Jahren mit der schottischen Sängerin und Künstlerin Rachel Sermanni auf, tourt mit ihr und macht Aufnahmen.

Igor Spallati - geboren 1985 in Italien, begann er mit 19 Jahren Kontrabass zu spielen und studierte in Italien klassischen Kontrabass bei Silvio Bruni und Franco Petracchi. 2010 zog er nach Berlin, um am „Jazz Institut Berlin“ unter der Leitung von Greg Cohen, John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel und anderen zu studieren. Unter anderem hat er mit Ikonen des Jazz wie Joe Chambers, Billy Hart, Nasheet Waits, Jorge Rossy, Fred Hersch, Ethan Iverson, Ambrose Akinmusire, Lewis Nash, Elias Stemeseder, Jay Anderson, Ronnie Burrage, Pietro Tonolo, Gabriele Mirabassi, Dado Moroni, Joe Hisaishi, Louis Bacalov und der HR BigBand gearbeitet.

Ugo Alunni ist ein Schlagzeuger aus Perugia, Italien. Er besuchte das Conservatorio di Musica "Francesco Morlacchi" di Perugia (2000-2004) und zog danach nach New York, um an der Collective School of Music (2005-2006) weiter zu studieren. Seit 2010 lebt er in Berlin, wo er am Jazz Institut Berlin unter der Leitung von John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen und David Friedman studierte und 2016 seinen Abschluss machte. Er hat mit Rossano Emili, Perugia Jazz Orchestra, Pietro Tonolo, Joe Chambers, Dan Kinzelman, Alessandro Lanzoni, Elias Stemeseder, Phil Donkin, Uli Kempendorff, Julia Hülsmann und vielen anderen gespielt.

A rare treat at the Zig Zag Jazz Club: Aurora Nealand, US multi-instrumentalist and New Yorker by choice, comes to Berlin and pays tribute to the great musical tradition of her hometown New Orleans - especially the music of Sidney Bechet. Nealand will be accompanied by a band of Berliners and old and new friends.

Aurora Nealand strives to explore the intersection of art, music and everyday life. She is a sound artist and multi-instrumentalist (saxophones, accordion, voice), born, as well as jazz in New Orleans. Her musical portfolio is characterized by an almost limitless breadth: She is the leader of The Royal Roses, a non-traditional traditional jazz band whose approach is based on collective improvisation, ranging from the traditions of early New Orleans jazz to AACM to collage sound art and musique concrete. Nealand's other musical projects include The Monocle Ensemble - her original music project and installation ensemble, redrawblak Trio, Instigation Orchestra, John Hollenbeck's GEORGE, and the Danger Dangers. In 2019/2020, she debuted KindHumanKind- a 90-minute fully staged theater show at the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans based on her original music. She also works regularly as a musical facilitator with Found Sound Nation-an organization that promotes international musical collaboration, and has been involved with the Walden School for Young Composers (as a teacher/performer) for 20 years. Eldar Tsalikov moved to Berlin in 2011 after initial studies in his native Tar, where he began his studies at the "Jazz Institute Berlin" and added the clarinet to the saxophone as a second instrument. In 2018, Eldar successfully graduated from the institute with a Bachelor's degree as an instrumentalist and a Master's degree as an arranger and composer. A skilled and versatile musician, Eldar has expanded his knowledge of jazz music (and not only that), collaborating with numerous European and Western performers of the various types of this genre: from the profound traditional styles, such as "hot jazz" (or "trad jazz") and swing, to modern forms of jazz and experimental music (Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Elias Stemeseder, Manlio Maresca, "The HAF", Anna Webber's "Percussive Mechanics"). With these and many other artists, Eldar has traveled throughout various countries, performing in world-renowned venues and concert halls.

Declan Forde is a pianist from Scotland and has been living in Berlin since 2014. In recent years, Forde has developed into a pianist in Berlin who covers a wide range of musical situations. From early jazz with Igor Spallati's Musicomaniacs, to performing the music of Duke Ellington with American bassist Greg Cohen (Ornette Coleman, John Zorn, Woody Allen, etc.); original music with James Banner's Usine to free improvised music with artists such as Jeff Williams, John Hollenbeck, Tobias Delius, Max Andrzejewski, Cansu Tanrikulu, Rudi Mahal, Jan Roder and Michael Griener.... Outside the world of jazz and improvised music, Forde has been performing, touring and recording with Scottish vocalist and artist Rachel Sermanni for over ten years.

Igor Spallati - born in Italy in 1985, he began playing double bass at the age of 19 and studied classical double bass in Italy with Silvio Bruni and Franco Petracchi. In 2010 he moved to Berlin to study at the "Jazz Institut Berlin" under the guidance of Greg Cohen, John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others. Ugo Alunni is a percussionist from Perugia, Italy. He attended the Conservatorio di Musica "Francesco Morlacchi" di Perugia (2000-2004) and then moved to New York to continue his studies at the Collective School of Music (2005-2006). Since 2010 he has been living in Berlin, where he studied at the Jazz Institute Berlin under the direction of John Hollenbeck, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen and David Friedman, graduating in 2016. He has played with Rossano Emili, Perugia Jazz Orchestra, Pietro Tonolo, Joe Chambers, Dan Kinzelman, Alessandro Lanzoni, Elias Stemeseder, Phil Donkin, Uli Kempendorff, Julia Hülsmann and many others.
