Wenn eine Konzertreihe über drei Jahre hinweg ausverkauft ist, dann ist das schon eine kleine Sensation. Die Rede ist vom legendären Arab Song, der früher in der Werkstatt der Kulturen stattfand und nun im Zigzag Jazzclub ein neues Zuhause mit optimaler Atmosphäre gefunden hat. Unter der Leitung des marokkanischen Oud-Spielers und Fusion-Musikers Alaa Zouiten können alle Musikbegeisterten eine explosiv-musikalische Hafla erleben. Hafla? Eine Hafla ist ein bisschen Party, ein bisschen transkulturelle Jamsession, ein bisschen Überraschung. Das wichtigste ist die Interaktion – zwischen Musikern auf der Bühne, zwischen Musikern und Publikum – und auch die spannende Interaktion zwischen arabischen, europäischen und Weltmusik-Sphären. Zeremonienmaster ist Alaa Zouiten, geboren in Casablanca. Dort begann seine musikalische Karriere zum Meister an der Oud, der arabischen Laute, und führte von der Ausbildung am Conservatoire National de Marrakech hin zum Sideman der Fusion- Band „Jbara“. Parallel setzte er seine musikalischen Studien fort und schloss 2013 ein Bachelor-Studium in Musikvermittlung und Philosophie an der Universität Erfurt ab. Daran schloss sich ein Masterstudium in Transcultural Music Studies an der Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar an. Er veröffentlichte mehrere Alben als Leader.
Weitere wichtige Stationen von Alaa Zouiten waren die musikalische Leitung und der Auftritt mit dem "Global Arabian Music Orchestra" in der Berliner Philharmonie, der Auftritt bei dem "Requiem für Syrien" in der Dresdner Philharmonie, Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla (sept 2020), die Tourneen von "TALKING OUD 2020/2021" in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien und Marokko sowie die UK-Tour mit "Making Tracks 2022".

Die so eigenständige wie expressive Musik von Vladimir Karparov zeichnet sich aus durch eine perfekte Fusion von zeitgenössischem Jazz und der rhythmischen und melodischen Farbigkeit der vitalen Volksmusik Bulgariens. Der vielseitig inspirierte Musiker und talentierte Komponist, der Genregrenzen mit Leichtigkeit überspringt, veröffentlichte sehr erfolgreiche eigene Alben wie „Thracian Dance“ (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). Im Jahr 2020 erhielt er die Auszeichnung des bulgarischen Kulturministeriums für die weltweite Popularisierung der bulgarischen Kultur. Neben der Tätigkeit in eigenen Formationen wie dem V. Karparov Quartett, dem Balkan Spirit Ensemble, dem Forkolor Saxophon Quartet sowie dem Duo Stawinski & Karparov und der Karparty Brass Band, tritt er aktiv als Gastmusiker mit verschiedenen Formationen auf.

Urs Johnen wurde 1982 in Tübingen geboren, ist in Calw im Schwarzwald aufgewachsen und ist heute in Berlin und in Andratx auf Mallorca zuhause. Er studierte Kontrabass in Stuttgart und in Weimar, erhielt Unterricht u.a. bei Horst-Dieter Wenkel, Ulrich Lau, Manfred Bründl, Frank Möbus, Jo Thönes, Klaus Dusek sowie Patrick Bopp und war Stipendiat der Thüringer Orchesterakademie als Kontrabassist bei den Jenaer Philharmonikern. Frühe Erfahrungen in Klassikensembles wie der Jeunesse Musicale Franco-Allemande, der Jungen Deutschen Philharmonie oder der Philharmonie der Nationen einerseits und Jazzensembles wie dem Landesjugendjazzorchester Baden-Württemberg andererseits prägten sein Selbstverständnis als musikalischer Brückenbauer und Grenzgänger. Er ist im Jazz-, Pop- und Klassikbereich aktiv und konzertierte mit Formationen von der Alten bis zur Zeitgenössischen Musik sowie vom Singer-Songwriter-Pop bis zum Avantgardejazz im In- und Ausland.

Der in Budapest aufgewachsene Peter Somos begann seine professionelle Schlagzeugerkarriere mit 14 Jahren und schloss sein Studium an der Codarts University of Music in Rotterdam mit summa cum laude ab. Im Laufe seiner Karriere hat er mit Künstlern wie Casey Benjamin, Mahesh Vinayakram, Nadishana, Paquito D'Riviera, Besh o droM, Krzysztof Scieranski, um nur einige zu nennen, aufgenommen bzw. ist mit ihnen aufgetreten. Er hat auch auf Festivals wie Sziget (HU), Exit (SR), WOMADelaide (AUS), Meskie Granie, Jamboree, Opener' (PL), Sudtirol Jazz (IT), JodhpurRIFF, Kolkata Jazz (IN), Shanghai World Music (CN), oder dem Jeju World Music (KR) gespielt. Er ist ein erfahrener Studiomusiker, der bei mehreren Aufnahmen in vielen Stilrichtungen (von Jazz über Pop-Rock bis Metal) mitgewirkt hat.

Master of ceremonies is Alaa Zouiten, born in Casablanca. There his musical career began as a master on the oud, the Arabic lute, and led from training at the Conservatoire National de Marrakech to sideman of the fusion band "Jbara". In parallel, he continued his musical studies and completed a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and Philosophy at the University of Erfurt in 2013. This was followed by a master's degree in Transcultural Music Studies at the Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar. He released several albums as a bandleader. Further important stations of Alaa Zouiten were the musical direction and the performance with the "Global Arabian Music Orchestra" in the Berlin Philharmonie, the performance at the "Requiem for Syria" in the Dresden Philharmonie, Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla (sept 2020), the tours of "TALKING OUD 2020/2021" in France, Germany, Spain and Morocco, as well as the UK tour with "Making Tracks 2022 "LA CARAVANE DU MAGHREB is a Berlin-based band consisting of three permanent, but often several musicians of different origins. Their repertoire consists mainly of traditional Moroccan music, including Gnawa, Malhoun and Chaabi, but also Algerian Rai music. For several years Redha Bendib (percussion & vocals), Miloud Messabih (percussion, accordion & vocals), Belbachir Youssef (vocals) have been playing together in several projects, representing the North African region at numerous cultural events in Germany. The different nationalities and musical influences have helped to create a very diverse palette of North African music.

Vladimir Karparov's music, as independent as it is expressive, is characterized by a perfect fusion of contemporary jazz and the rhythmic and melodic color of the vital folk music of Bulgaria. The versatile inspired musician and talented composer, who crosses genre boundaries with ease, released very successful albums of his own such as "Thracian Dance" (2007), Forkolor (2014), Antihypocrisyl (2016), Iglika (2022). In 2020 he received the award of the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture for popularizing Bulgarian culture worldwide. In addition to playing in his own formations such as the V. Karparov Quartet, Balkan Spirit Ensemble, Forkolor Saxophone Quartet, as well as Duo Stawinski & Karparov and Karparty Brass Band, he actively performs as a guest musician with various formations.

Urs Johnen was born in Tübingen in 1982, grew up in Calw in the Black Forest and now also lives in Berlin and in Andratx, Mallorca. Early experiences in classical ensembles such as the Jeunesse Musicale Franco-Allemande, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie or the Philharmonie der Nationen on the one hand and jazz ensembles such as the Landesjugendjazzorchester Baden-Württemberg on the other hand shaped his self-image as a musical bridge builder and border crosser. He is active in jazz, pop and classical music and has performed with formations ranging from early to contemporary music as well as from singer-songwriter pop to avant-garde jazz in Germany and abroad.

Peter Somos, who grew up in Budapest, began his professional drumming career at the age of 14 and graduated summa cum laude from Codarts University of Music in Rotterdam. He is an experienced studio musician who has participated in several recordings in many styles (from jazz to pop-rock to metal). He was also hired by the best rock metal studio in Eastern Europe (Hertz Studios, known for their work with Behemoth or Decapitated) to record the whole sound library.
