ARAB SONG – Rückkehr einer Legende

Wenn eine Konzertreihe über drei Jahre hinweg ausverkauft ist, dann ist das schon eine kleine Sensation. Die Rede ist vom legendären Arab Song, der früher in der Werkstatt der Kulturen stattfand und nun im Zigzag Jazzclub ein neues Zuhause mit optimaler Atmosphäre gefunden hat. Unter der Leitung des marokkanischen Oud-Spielers und Fusion-Musikers Alaa Zouiten können alle Musikbegeisterten eine explosiv-musikalische Hafla erleben. Hafla? Eine Hafla ist ein bisschen Party, ein bisschen transkulturelle Jamsession, ein bisschen Überraschung. Das wichtigste ist die Interaktion – zwischen Musikern auf der Bühne, zwischen Musikern und Publikum – und auch die spannende Interaktion zwischen arabischen, europäischen und Weltmusik-Sphären. Schwer zu beschreiben, muss man erleben. Eines steht fest, wir warnen Sie jetzt schon: Es macht süchtig. 

Zeremonienmaster ist Alaa Zouiten, geboren in Casablanca. Dort begann seine musikalische Karriere zum Meister an der Oud, der arabischen Laute, und führte von der Ausbildung am Conservatoire National de Marrakech hin zum Sideman der Fusion- Band „Jbara“. Parallel setzte er seine musikalischen Studien fort und schloss 2013 ein Bachelor-Studium in Musikvermittlung und Philosophie an der Universität Erfurt ab. Daran schloss sich ein Masterstudium in Transcultural Music Studies an der Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik in Weimar an, wo er 2015/16 auch als Gastdozent tätig war. Mit einem Stipendium des Arab Fund for Arts and Culture arbeitete Alaa Zouiten 2015 an seinem zweiten Album Talking Oud. In diesem Album experimentierte er mit den stilistischen technischen und ästhetischen Möglichkeiten der Oud. Das Resultat war ein faszinierender Mix aus arabisch-andalusischem Jazz-Rock, eine Fusion frei von Vorurteilen, ganz ohne Hierarchie der musikalischen Stile. In seinen Kompositionen und Arrangements, benutzt Alaa die unendliche Vielfalt in Zeit und Raum - ein kreativer Prozess, welcher ständig nach neuen musikalischen Perspektiven sucht und die Schönheit der Musik feiert. Dieses Potential ist die Grundlage für die Zusammenarbeit von Alaa Zouiten mit hochkarätigen Musiker:innen in ganz verschiedenen Fusion-Projekten des musikalisch kosmopolitischen Berlins.
Weitere wichtige Stationen von Alaa Zouiten waren die musikalische Leitung und der Auftritt mit dem "Global Arabian Music Orchestra" in der Berliner Philharmonie, der Auftritt bei dem "Requiem für Syrien" in der Dresdner Philharmonie, Bienal del Flamenco in Sevilla (sept 2020) und die Tourneen von "TALKING OUD 2020/2021" in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien und Marokko.

Momo Djender
Djender ist ein „Sohn des Mittelmeeres“. Er ist geboren und aufgewachsen in Algier. Seine Ahnen sind Kabylen, ein nordafrikanisches Amazigh-Volk. Momo wächst mit Chaabi-Musik auf, einer traditionellen algerischen Musikrichtung, die ihre Ursprünge in arabisch-andalusischer Musik hat, entdeckt jedoch ebenfalls früh seine Liebe zu Soul, Jazz und Popmusik. 1994 kommt er nach Berlin, die Stadt, die zu seiner zweiten Heimat wird. Seine Neugier und Offenheit für andere Kulturen lässt ihn fortan mit verschiedensten Künstlern arbeiten, namentlich Ramesh B. Weeratunga (Sri Lanka), Hussein Kili (Marokko), Eda Zari (Albanien), Jocelyn B. Smith (USA), Hans Lüdemann (Deutschland) , Klaus Doldinger (Deutschland) etc...
Im Herbst 2012 tritt Momo als Talent bei der 2. Staffel von Voice of Germany auf. Gemeinsam mit seinem Battle-Partner Vinh Kuat begeistert er das Publikum mit seiner Version des Sting-Songs „Desert Rose“.

Rafat Muhammad
Rafat ist ein ägyptischer Schlagzeuger, der in Berlin lebt und über einen großen Erfahrungsschatz als Live-Performer und im Studio verfügt. Er hat mit vielen namhaften Künstlern zusammengearbeitet und bewegt sich mühelos zwischen Pop, Soul, afrikanischer, orientalischer Musik und Jazz.

Carsten Schmelzer
Carsten studierte E-Bass am BIT – Musicians Institute in Los Angles, USA. Seit 40 Jahren als Profimusiker national und international unterwegs, dabei hat er über 160 CD-Einspielungen als Musiker und über 100 CD-Produktionen als Produzent veröffentlicht. 2006 gewann er mit der TV- Serie „I got a rocket“, für die er die Filmmusik schrieb, einen EMMY Award. Seit 16 Jahren ist er mit seinem Produktionsteam 3BERLIN (www.dreiberlin.de) im Kindermusik- Bereich erfolgreich tätig.

ARAB SONG - Return of a legend

ARAB SONG has the great pleasure to invite one of the leading voices of Gnawa and Moroccan music Mehdi Nassouli from Paris, for a special edition 100% GNAWA!

When a concert series is sold out for three years, it is already a small sensation. We are talking about the legendary Arab Song, which used to take place at the Werkstatt der Kulturen and has now found a new home with an optimal atmosphere at the Zigzag Jazzclub. 

Under the direction of Moroccan oud player and fusion musician Alaa Zouiten, all music enthusiasts can experience an explosive musical Hafla. Hafla? Hafla is a bit of party, a bit of transcultural jam session, a bit of surprise. The most important thing is the interaction - between musicians on stage, between musicians and audience - and also the exciting interaction between Arabic, European and world music spheres. Hard to describe, must be experienced.

Master of ceremonies is Alaa Zouiten, born in Casablanca. With a grant from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Alaa Zouiten worked on his second album Talking Oud in 2015. In this album he experimented with the stylistic technical and aesthetic possibilities of the oud. The result was a fascinating mix of Arabic-Andalusian jazz-rock, a fusion free of preconceptions, completely without hierarchy of musical styles. In his compositions and arrangements, Alaa uses the infinite diversity in time and space - a creative process that constantly searches for new musical perspectives and celebrates the beauty of music. This potential is the basis for Alaa Zouiten's collaborations with top-class musicians in very different fusion projects of musically cosmopolitan Berlin. Momo Djender Djender is a "son of the Mediterranean". He was born and raised in Algiers. His ancestors are Kabyles, a North African Amazigh people. Momo grows up listening to Chaabi music, a traditional Algerian music genre that has its origins in Arabic-Andalusian music, but also discovers his love for soul, jazz and pop music early on. In 1994 he comes to Berlin, the city that becomes his second home. His curiosity and openness to other cultures led him to work with various artists, namely Ramesh B. Weeratunga (Sri Lanka), Hussein Kili (Morocco), Eda Zari (Albania), Jocelyn B. Smith (USA), Hans Lüdemann (Germany) , Klaus Doldinger (Germany) etc...In the fall of 2012, Momo appears as a talent on the 2nd season of Voice of Germany. Together with his battle partner Vinh Kuat, he wows the audience with his version of the Sting song "Desert Rose".Spring 2013.

Rafat is an Egyptian drummer who lives in Berlin and has a wealth of experience as a live performer and in the studio. He has collaborated with many renowned artists and moves effortlessly between pop, soul, African, oriental music and jazz.

Carsten Schmelzer
Carsten studied electric bass at BIT - Musicians Institute in Los Angles, USA. He has been touring nationally and internationally as a professional musician for 40 years, releasing over 160 CD recordings as a musician and over 100 CD productions as a producer. In 2006 he won an EMMY Award with the TV series "I got a rocket", for which he wrote the film music. For 16 years he has been successfully active in the children's music sector with his production team 3BERLIN (www.dreiberlin.de).
