The ET Quartet featuring some of the most memorable and active jazz musicians based in Berlin will be exploring the vast possibilities of their own unique musical languages within the standard Jazz repertoire.
Eldar Tsalikov (saxophone/clarinet)
Born in 1993 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia into a musicians family. At the age of eight Eldar began learning saxophone at the Kim Nazaretov Children’s Jazz School, eventually picking up piano and flute as well. After ten years of studying classical and jazz repertoire he graduated in 2011, after which he moved to Berlin in order to continue his studies at the Jazz Institut Berlin. During his time at the institute, Eldar discovered his big love for clarinet and it’s sound, which lead him to embrace it as his ‘second main’ instrument. In 2018 Eldar graduated receiving his bachelor- and master’s degrees.
Since the beginning of his artistic life in Berlin, Eldar has been not only working on his performative skills in jazz music and it’s numerous subgenres, but also expanding his knowledge of various folk music traditions from around the world (e.g. Turkish, Greek, Balkan, Arabic, Hindustani, Carnatic). While developing his own style of playing, he got to collaborate with numerous European and Western performers of various kinds, most notably Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Laurie Anderson, Eyvind Kang, Marcin Masecki, Manlio Maresca, Tobias Delius, Elias Stemeseder, Anna Webber. With those and many other artists, Eldar got to travel around different countries, performing in worldwide recognised venues and concert halls such as «Birdland» (New York / USA), «Elbphilharmonie» (Hamburg, Germany), «Konzerthaus Berlin» (Berlin, Germany), «TivoliVredenburg» (Utrecht, Netherlands), as well as taking part in festivals such as «Copenhagen Jazz Fest» (Denmark), «Ascona Jazz Fest» (Switzerland), «French Quarter Fest» (New Orleans / USA), «Glasgow Jazz Festival» (Scotland).
Elias Stemeseder (piano)
Born in Salzburg, Austria in 1990, Elias lived in Berlin from 2010 and moved to New York in 2015. Besides his main instrument, the acoustic piano, he also plays synthesizers. He performs in a variety of musical idioms ranging from the song-oriented music of Jim Black's trio to contemporary classical pieces by John Zorn to the electric music of Eyebone. Current projects include collaborations with John Zorn (John Zorn's Bagatelles), the Greg Cohen Quintet, Philipp Gropper's "Philm", Jim Black's "Malamute" Anna Webber's "Percussive Mechanics", Robert Landfermann Quintet and "OTIS+WEDDING".
Elias Stemeseder has performed solo concerts at the Nuoro Jazz Festival (IT), Haus Der Berliner Festspiele (DE), 12points Festival Dublin (IRL) and Südtirol Jazzfestival (IT). He leads a Berlin - based quartet with Eldar Tsalikov, Igor Spallati and Ugo Alunni and co-leads the bands Jagged Spheres (with Anna Webber and Devin Gray) and Eyebone (with Nels Cline and Jim Black). Since 2008 Elias has been working extensively with the American drummer Jim Black. The Jim Black trio (with Thomas Morgan on double bass) has released the critically acclaimed recordings Somatic and Actuality on the German label Winter&Winter Recordings and The Constant on the Swiss label Intakt Records. In 2013, Elias formed the collective trio "Eyebone“ with Jim Black and guitarist Nels Cline, in which he plays the Wurlitzer piano and bass synthesizers.
Phil Donkin (double bass)
Phil Donkin enjoys an extensive touring schedule with international cutting edge artists. Phil’s latest offering as a leader is ‘Value’ (2019 NWog Records). This follows his earlier release ‘The Gate’ (2015 Whirlwind Recordings). When Phil is not leading his own bands, he can been seen and heard touring with the likes of Oliver Steidle, Tom Challenger, Philipp Gropper, Frank Möbus, Kalle Kalima, Jim Black, Wanja Slavin, Johannes Enders, Bastian Stein. Phil has toured throughout Europe,North America,Africa and Asia. In recent years Phil has also performed with John Abercrombie, Marc Copland, Ralph Alessi, Joey Baron, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Chris Speed, Dan Weiss, Ethan Iverson, Bill Stewart. He currently lives in Berlin.
Ugo Alunni (drums)
Ugo Alunni is a drummer from Perugia, Italy. He attended the Conservatorio di Musica "Francesco Morlacchi” di Perugia (2000-2004) after which he moved to New York for further studies at the Collective School of Music (2005-2006). He has been living in Berlin since 2010 where he studied at the Jazz Institut Berlin under the guidance of John Hollenbeck, Greg Cohen, Kurt Rosenwinkel and David Friedman, graduating in 2016. He has played with Rossano Emili, Perugia Jazz Orchestra, Pietro Tonolo, Joe Chambers, Alessandro Lanzoni, Elias Stemeseder, Marcin Masecki, Tarek Yamani and many others.
