Walt Weiskopf - sax. (USA)
Andreas Lang - d. bass (DNK)
Carl Winther - p. (DNK)
Anders Mogensen - dr. (DNK)
American saxophonist, composer, and author Walt Weiskopf teams up for a fourth year with three of Europe's finest and most sought-after jazz musicians, hitting the international jazz circuit throughout Europe and Scandinavia as the Walt Weiskopf European Quartet (WWEQ).
Walt Weiskopf remains a somewhat underrated musician in spite of his resume, a pity as he has a vigorous approach to tenor saxophone, characterized by a sharp nasal tone that is particularly effective in slower tempos, and an uncommon capacity to interpret well-known ballads and compose catchy yet complex tunes firmly in a postbop/John Coltrane vein. His European (or rather Danish) Quartet has now been together for close to three years and it shows, in spite of the recent replacement of bassist Daniel Franck with Andreas Lang. This working band's tightness is put to the test by Weiskopf s challenging material. Worldwide was recorded in just one day following a tour. The material is quite varied and draws inspiration from the quartet's frequent travels across the globe and a number of sources, ranging from bossa nova in "Back in Brazil", `bluesy' Japan ("Back in Japan"), Scottish highlands ("Scottish Folk Song") and a more Central African approach in "Entebbe". The highlights are Tadd Dameron's "Soultrane", with an exquisite a cappella intro; suspenseful mid-tempo ballad "Marcie by Moonlight", in which one can hear echoes of Joe Henderson; and a bouncy interpretation of Quincy Jones' "The Pawnbroker". Also of note is Carl Winther's tasteful and somewhat eclectic piano—see his invention in "Scottish Folk Song"—in which the influence of a young Herbie Hancock is more evident than McCoy Tyner, with whom he is often associated. Lang provides an effective anchor to the quartet with his deep, round sound while drummer Anders Mogensen takes quite a few liberties yet maintains a constant swinging drive. The hardboppish "Coat of Arms" concludes a well-balanced program in which each member of the quartet provides joyful contributions.
Along with Weiskopf, WWEQ musicians pianist Carl Winther, bassist Andreas Lang, and drummer Anders Mogensen continue to make impressive marks, attracting world-wide attention with their talents touring with jazz greats Jerry Bergonzi, Tim Hagans, Adam Nussbaum, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Greg Hutchinson and David Liebman. At the conclusion of the tour, WWEQ will record new material in Copenhagen where Weiskopf will continue to showcase the confluence of three of Europe's most exciting rhythm section artists.
Says Jazz Weekly about WWEQ's second album Worldwide (Orenda Records, 2019) "Big toned tenor saxist Walt Weiskopf sounds like a Prestige-era John Coltrane on this hard bopping session with Carl Winther/p, Andreas Lang/b and Anders Mogensen/dr on this collection of originals and a couple covers."

ENTRANCE FEES
One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!
EINTRITT
