The Zig Zag is proud to announce a brand new and fresh Sunday concert series that showcases a community of jazz artists responsible for bringing about an explosion of energy and life into the Berlin jazz scene. The series will feature some of the most in demand, highly skilled and exciting young jazz talents in the scene today. Going against the trend of complexity, abstraction and the “academization” of the arts, these young masters have taken the jazz scene by surprise by packing in the clubs and bringing back to life a love and passion for hard swinging music. Performances are completely acoustic with little to no amplification. Subtle interaction, melodic focus and soulful virtuosity is at play here. If you’re interested in listening to some of the finest swinging sounds of jazz this is not an event to miss out on.

Der Kölner Trompeter, der in den vergangenen 7 Jahren vor Allem durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem legendären Tenorsaxophonisten Rick Margitza auch international auf sich aufmerksam gemacht hat, ist für seine Vorliebe für swingenden High Energy Jazz bekannt. Mit 4 Besetzungen der Extraklasse kommt er zu seiner ersten Residency in den Zig Zag Jazzclub. Man darf gespannt sein!

Peter Protschka ist seit seinem Jazzkonzertexamen an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln 2005 auf der deutschen und europäischen Szene als Jazzsolist vor allem mit eigenen Gruppen aktiv. Seit dieser Zeit schreibt er auch Musik für seine Formationen, die sich am amerikanischen Postbop Idiom orientieren aber immer eine sehr persönliche europäische Note aufweisen. Seit 2002 erscheinen regelmäßig Veröffentlichungen mit Protschka als Leader oder Sideman mit Musikern wie Paul Heller, Dejan Terzic, Allen Blairman oder Thomas Stabenow. In seinen Bands sind auch live immer wieder Musiker wie Jürgen Seefelder, Paul Heller, Martin Sasse und ganz aktuell der renommierte amerikanische in Paris lebende Tenorsaxophonist Rick Margitza zu hören. 2004 wurde er mit dem Jazzstipendium der Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg ausgezeichnet. 2009 erschienen drei seiner Kompositionen im German Book Vol. 1., einer ausgewählten Sammlung deutscher zeitgenössischer Jazzkompositionen. Zudem bewegt er sich seit 2010 im Spannungsfeld zwischen europäischer Klassik und Jazz, beschäftigt sich mit Alter Musik auf historischen Instrumenten, ist hier auch mit exponierten Orchestern der Alten Musik Szene zu hören, und präsentierte im Sommer 2009 erstmals ein Crossover-Programm zwischen Jazz und klassischer Musik zusammen mit seinem Vater Josef Protschka. Die Zusammenarbeit mit seinem Vater dauert bis heute an. 2010 erwarb er einen Master of Music im Fach Barocktrompete an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.

Clemens Orth
Clemens was born in Heidelberg/Germany. His musical carreer started at age 3 when he touched the piano for the first time and was overwhelmed by the magic of the sound. After 3 experimental years exploring its possibilities he started taking regular piano lessons at age 6.
After a bunch of years of classical training he soon discovered his passion for other keyboard instruments such as organ, synths and his voice. At age 17 he made his c-exam in classical organ. At that period he started playing jazz music. His newly formed piano trio won the 1st prize at the the „krakow jazz juniors“ contest in 1995.

James Banner
James Banner was born in Dudley, England in 1991. He has studied in Birmingham, Paris and Berlin, and is now based between Berlin and the UK, working around Europe as a musician, educator and composer. In the UK he is composer in residence for Make The Paint Dance, workshop leader for Jazzlines (Town Hall Symphony Hall Birmingham), as well as double bass tutor at Leeds College of Music junior school. His debut album as bandleader will be released on 18.10.2018 by the Cologne-based label JazzHausMusik, followed by a tour of Germany in March-April 2019. As a composer he received a studio award from the Berlin Senate Department of Culture and Europe and the Elsa Neumann Stipendium 2018 from the Berlin University of the Arts/Hanns Eisler, which supports the ambitious choral/improvising ensemble project Voices of Berlin.

He is active as a co-leader and sideman in projects including the Birgitta Flick Quartet, The Good Old Good Ones, Mark Pringle, Double Double Bass (with Greg Cohen) and the trio Elias Stemeseder/James Banner/Ugo Alunni, as well as numerous other international collaborative projects. He also co-curates a monthly residency alongside pianist Declan Forde named Practically Married at Berlin’s Donau115, voted one of Europe’s best jazz clubs by The Guardian.

Jordan Dinsdale

A young drummer from the UK, Jordan has played with notable musicians such as Chris Cheek and Judy Niemack.

Jordan's professional music career started age 17, playing around England in various groups. He began studying at Leeds college of Music on a scholarship (2010-2017) with Dave Walsh, Sebastiaan De Krom and Mark Sanders, graduating with a first class honours and being awarded the CBE Peter Roberts Memorial prize for achieving the highest marked recital performance. In August of 2015-2017, Jordan was given bursaries to attend the Begues jazz camp in Barcelona, taking classes with notable icons such as Peter Bernstein, Albert Tootie Heath and Jimmy Wormworth; this is how Jordan met founder of the camp, Jorge Rossy.

In January 2017, Jordan returned to New York to both have lessons and study with some of the masters including Jimmy Cobb, Johnathan Blake, Ari Hoenig and Eric Mcpherson. In August 2017, Jordan was awarded a scholarship to attend the Global Music Foundation in London studying and playing with world class musicians Bruce Barth and Perico Sambeat. He was then nominated to take part in the 'Rising Stars' concert alongside some of the UK's most talented musicians. Jordan also played at London Jazz festival with the Gero Schipmann sextet later in the year.

Jordan is currently based in Leeds, playing around the UK and Europe.

EINTRITT
Einer der Gründe, die den Zig Zag Jazzclub so einzigartig machen, ist, dass er der erste und einzige Jazzclub der Welt ist, dem es gelingt nur durch freiwilligem Eintritt/Crowdfunding Events von Weltklasse zu finanzieren. Und wie machen wir das? Ganz einfach. Während der Konzertpause geben wir bekannt, dass wir Geld einsammeln werden. Bei den meisten Konzerten (außer Jam Sessions) informieren wir unsere Kunden, dass ein Beitrag von ungefähr 15 Euro es uns erlaubt die Musiker gerecht zu bezahlen. Manche geben dabei mehr und andere weniger... und das ist auch in Ordnung. Wir haben auf diese Weise schon Hunderte Konzerte organisiert.
