The Zig Zag is proud to announce a brand new and fresh Sunday concert series that showcases a community of jazz artists responsible for bringing about an explosion of energy and life into the Berlin jazz scene. The series will feature some of the most in demand, highly skilled and exciting young jazz talents in the scene today. Going against the trend of complexity, abstraction and the “academization” of the arts, these young masters have taken the jazz scene by surprise by packing in the clubs and bringing back to life a love and passion for hard swinging music. Performances are completely acoustic with little to no amplification. Subtle interaction, melodic focus and soulful virtuosity is at play here. If you’re interested in listening to some of the finest swinging sounds of jazz this is not an event to miss out on.

This evening marks the first on-stage meeting of these four musicians. All being very active players in the Berlin Jazz-scene they will join forces for this night to celebrate the underrepresented contribution of female composers to the Great American Songbook. Featuring compositions by Billie Holiday, Dorothy Fields, Ann Ronell, Lil' Hardin Armstrong and Mary-Lou Williams, to name a few, this group will bring their beautiful, but often overlooked, compositions back into focus.

Mette Nadja Hansen was born in Hvidovre, a bit outside of Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1987. She developed her passion for singing in a very early age and was discovered and recruited for the Danish National Radio’s Girls Choir in the age of 10. In 2008 she was introduced to jazz by legendary Danish trumpet player and educator Thomas Fryland and preeminent Danish vocalist Veronica Mortensen at a preparatory course for the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Denmark. Her mentors encouraged her to apply for the jazz program at Skurups Folkshögskola in south of Sweden and in 2010 she was accepted. After the 2 years jazz program her eager to learn more and discover music from all corners of the world brought her to Berlin where she is currently studying with Greg Cohen, Tino Derado, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Judy Niemack among others at the Jazz Institut Berlin.

Johannes von Ballestrem is a German pianist living in Berlin. He is known for his diversity, being able to perform in a variety of traditional and modern jazz styles. With different bands he regularly performs in Germany and internationally. He has shared the bandstand with jazz greats like Kurt Rosenwinkel, Greg Cohen, Norma Winstone, Eric Harland, Kurt Elling, Jim Black and Till Brönner.

Jordan Dinsdale - A young British drummer based in Berlin, Jordan has studied and played with some of the greatest names in Jazz including Jimmy Cobb, Chris Cheek, Jimmy Wormworth, Mike Kanan and Yasushi Nakamura. Studying at Leeds college of Music on a scholarship (2010-2017) he graduated with a first class honours and was awarded the CBE Peter Roberts Memorial prize, for achieving the highest marked recital performance. In January 2017, Jordan returned to New York to study with some of the masters including Jimmy Cobb, Johnathan Blake, Ari Hoenig and Eric McPherson.

Sidney Werner is a Bass Player from Berlin. He studied at the Jazz-Institute Berlin with prof.Greg Cohen and is a very active Part of the Berlin-Jazz scene. His musical interests are diverse and his playing known for its versatility which accounts for him being part of a series of different projects such as the "Far East Trio", the "Omniversal Earkestra" or Chris Dahlgrens Singer/Songwriter project "Dhalgren", to only name a few. As a Bassist his focus lies on making the Band sound good. Contributing to the whole, the music, rather than putting himself in the focus. He is playing regularly all over Berlin and has performed across and outside of Europe.

ENTRANCE FEES
One of the reasons that makes the zig zag jazz club so unique is that it is the first and only jazz club in the world that manages to finance world class events through a crowd funding concept. How do we do it? Its quite simple… during the break of the concert we make an announcement regarding the collection for the evening. For most concerts (excluding the jam session) we inform our customers that a fee of around 15€ per person will allow us to fairly compensate the musicians. Some people give more and some give less… and that´s ok… we ´ve already successfully promoted hundreds of concerts like this!!!

EINTRITT
