Before taking its yearly summer break the Zig Zag has decided to take its break with a Bang! Tonight´s group of musicians have helped elevate the Zig Zag Jazz club to one of the most respected Jazz Clubs in the world. Through a successful and sold out series of concerts this incredible group, featuring some of the most established musicians in the German Jazz Scene, have interpreted the works of Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, and Cannonball Aderely. Their incredible performances have created a following amongst young, old, jazz and non jazz enthusiasts. As a season closer we have decided to celebrate some of the greatest musical moments they have presented over the past year. Be prepared for an evening of energy, virtuosity, and musical mastery that will make you understand why jazz was once upon a time the most popular style of music in the world!
Florian Menzel: Despite his young age trumpeter and composer Florian Menzel, born in Arnsberg in the Sauerland region in Germany in 1988, has already reached remarkable experience and success in the world of music. In 2007 he was awarded the „SkodaJazzAward“ by the German Jazz Federation for his outstanding instrumental skills and 2 years later won the first prize at the „Yamaha Trumpet Contest 2009“. As a band leader and sideman he has been working with among others Peter Weniger, Mark Wyand, Rich Perry, Winard Harper, Greg Cohen, Torsten Goods, Till Broenner, Gerard Presencer and Bill Forman.
Born in Tel-Aviv, Uri Gincel came to berlin in 2009 and quickly became one of the most in demand piano players on the scene. Uri has toured the world with many projects, including his own "Uri Gincel Trio”, “Bonaparte” and studied under some major musicians such as Arnie Lawrence and Walter Blending Jr.
Ben Kraef is a German-Montenegrin saxophonist and composer based in Berlin.
Ben graduated from the University of Music “Hanns Eisler", Berlin. In 2007 he relocated to New York City on a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and obtained a Master of Arts from The City College of New York in 2009. In the past years Ben has won international acclaim in form of several prizes and awards, among these most notably the Biberacher Jazzpreis (2006), the “Concours International de Jazz de Fribourg" (2007), the Yamaha Saxophone Contest (2007), and the Billie Stoller Scholarship to an outstanding scholar and musician from The City College of New York (2008).
Thomas Steiger: One of the most in demand session musicians in the German music scene Steiger has a unique laid back fat and tight bass sound that has made him a first call bassist for some of the most renowned artists in the national and international music scene. He has worked with Sarah Connor, Jimmy Somerville, Torsten Goods, Gregory Porter, Klaus Doldinger, Chris Barber, Nils Landgren, Kim Sanders, Pete York, Greg Cohen, and many more.
