“. . .a sturdily approachable new jazz quartet. . .this is a band that could easily keep going for a while without running out of options.” - Nate Chinen, New York Times
“Riverside injects some toe-tapping, feel-good soul and brotherly hoots and hollers into the music.” - Ken Micallef, DownBeat
-Carla Bley Post-bop jazz has produced only a few first-rate composers of larger forms; Carla Bley ranks high among them. Bley possesses an unusually wide compositional range; she combines an acquaintance with and love for jazz in all its forms with great talent and originality. Her music is a peculiarly individual type of hyper-modern jazz. Bley is capable of writing music of great drama and profound humor, often within the confines of the same piece. In the tradition of jazz's very finest composers and improvisers, Bley has developed a style of her very own, and the music as a whole is the better for it.
-Dave Douglas arguably became the most original trumpeter/composer of his generation. Douglas' stylistic range is broad yet unaffected; his music is not a pastiche, but rather a personal aesthetic that reflects a wide variety of interests. He explicitly cites such diverse influences as Igor Stravinsky, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane. As a composer, Douglas adapts and synthesizes unusual forms and creates his own out of disparate elements. As a trumpeter, he possesses a comprehensive jazz technique; certainly one hears the ghost of Lester Bowie in Douglas' expressive manipulations of timbre and pitch, but more pronounced is the integration of distinctive compositional and improvisational conceptions that ultimately defines his work.
-Steve Swallow is one of the most accomplished and most recorded jazz bassists of all time, with a career that’s now in its sixth decade—but there’s nothing he likes better than laying down a good groove. He has placed first in the Downbeat International Critics Poll since 1983 (electric bass), in the Downbeat Readers Poll since 1985, and has won the Jazz Times poll (electric bass) several times recently. He lives in upstate New York.
-Chet Doxas is quickly becoming one of the most well respected and sought after saxophonists and composers of his generation. He is best known for his ability to add his inspired voice to a wide variety of musical settings and styles.
-Drummer Jim Doxas was born in Montréal, Canada, into an artistically vibrant family and established himself early on in his career as a versatile percussionist.Heavily influenced by rock, jazz, Motown and world music, his credits on various recordings range from drummer, percussionist and composer. In addition, he is also an established recording engineer and a lecturer at McGill University. Doxas is a popular featured artist at jazz festivals worldwide and has worked with John Abercrombie, Joe Lovano, Hank Jones, Edward Simon, Dave Binney and Maria Schneider.
