Australian celebrated world-roots-jazz band The Vampires return to promote their newest release “The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke". Featuring four of Australia's most awarded instrumentalists, including saxophonist Jeremy Rose, trumpeter Nick Garbett, Thelonius Monk Institute alumnus bassist Alex Boneham, and drummer Alex Masso, the band has released five albums and toured relentlessly around Australia, the UK and Europe.
Combining risk-taking improvisation, sophisticated compositions and an uncanny sense of dialogue between the sax-trumpet frontline, the band has developed a style of its own that effortlessly combines influences from all corners of the world. To mark 10 years of performing together, the band collaborated with one of the jazz world’s most talked about guitarists, guitarist Lionel Loueke for their new release 'The Vampires Meet Lionel Loueke', which they will be launching tonight. 

 

Jeremy Rose (Sydney) is a saxophonist/bass clarinetist/composer interested in expanding dialogues between music disciplines, styles and cultures. His conceptual extension of two different art forms – composed and improvised music – has led to extensive experimenting and theorizing on accepted notions of communication and tension. His music effortlessly crosses borders, moving successfully between jazz, improvised music, contemporary classical, world music and hip-hop. Jeremy started an independent record label in 2009, Earshift Music, and has released over a dozen albums of original music with his projects including The Vampires, The Strides, Jeremy Rose Quartet, Compass Saxophone Quartet and the Earshift Orchestra. The media has reported that ‘his compositions stand out from the pack’ (SMH), that he ‘is developing into a significant Australian voice’ (Dr Michael Webb – Jazz-Planet), and that ‘his playing shows subtle glimpses of a mature master’ (The Australian). Jeremy’s numerous grants and accolades include the 2015 APRA Professional Development Award for Jazz, 2009 Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist, 2012 and 2013 Freedman Jazz Fellowship Finalist, and the 2012 and 2013 APRA/MCA Art Music Awards finalist. Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance (Honours Class I) and a PhD in composition from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Jeremy has performed at festivals and jazz clubs throughout Australia and has had multiple tours to Europe, the UK and Japan. Recent 2016 highlights include a sold-out Australian tour with The Vampires and Benin born US guitarist Lionel Loueke, a five-star review for his Earshift Orchestra album ‘Iron in the Blood’ (ABC Classics / Universal), a collaborative recording with US guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel in Berlin and guest soloist/composer with the Con’s Modern Music Ensemble.

Nick Garbett has established himself as one of Australia’s leading jazz and creative music trumpeters. His trumpet playing and compositions are featured in several world music/jazz groups, including The Vampires, The Strides and Colombian roots/rock band Watussi. In 2011 Nick was place third in the National Jazz Awards for trumpet. Nick has performed at many of Australia’s Music Festivals, including Womadelaide, East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, Wangaratta Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Brian Eno’s Vivid Festival, as well as several international tours to counties including Colombia, Peru, Germany, Japan, Korea, China, New Zealand and Malaysia.

Nick has also performed, recorded and toured with some of Australia’s top alternate/pop acts including Lisa Mitchell, The Beautiful Girls, The Panics, Mahalia and Jimmy Barnes and Passenger, as well as working in the house horn section for the channel 9 TV show “The Voice” for the past three seasons.

-Bassist Alex Boneham is one of the most in demand musicians of his generation, known for his versatility and relentless creative drive. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Alex has worked extensively worldwide, having lived in Rome, Italy, and Los Angeles, California, in addition to his native Australia. Highlights include performing at the White House with 14x GRAMMY winner Herbie Hancock for First Lady Michelle Obama during International Jazz Day, touring Morocco with Hancock and Dee Dee Bridgewater, and headlining the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl with Herbie and Wayne Shorter.

Alex was named the Bell Awards Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 2012, the national jazz industry award in Australia. In 2015 he took 2nd place in the National Jazz Awards, the major jazz instrumental competition in Australia, in addition to being one of the youngest finalists ever in the same competition back in 2008. He is a featured artist on Sarah McKenzie’s album “Close Your Eyes” which won the ARIA for jazz in 2012 (the Australian GRAMMY equivalent). Back in 2007 he won the James Morrison Generations in Jazz, a major competition for musicians under 19 years old, and in 2009 was awarded a BBM Award, an award given to two artists each year to strengthen cultural ties between Australia and the UK. 

As an in demand recording artist, Alex has been featured on over 30 studio records. He appears on albums by artists such as Tommy Emmanuel, UK singer-songwriter Passenger (whose single “Let Her Go” is the 26th most viewed video of all time on YouTube) and ARIA winner Sarah McKenzie. He has also released three critically-acclaimed albums with the Australian co-led group The Vampires - Chellowdene (2010), Garfish (2012), and Tiro (2013).

In addition to his performances at the White House, Hollywood Bowl, and in Morocco, Alex has performed at countless major festivals around the world including the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), North Sea Jazz Festival (Netherlands), Umbria Jazz Festival (Italy), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia), Bangen Jazz Festival (Sweden), and notable venues such as the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Centre (D.C.) with revolutionary vocalist Al Jarreau, Dolby Theatre (LA), Blue Note Tokyo and Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club (London). Alex Masso is a drummer with an interest in improvisation, the jazz idiom and other contemporary music. He has studied jazz drumming at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, tabla with Bobby Singh, and had a significant but informal musical education through his involvement with the NOW now. His projects include jazz groups Trio Apoplectic, Marc Hannaford Trio and The Vampires, improvised music ensemble The Splinter Orchestra and an ongoing solo project. In 2008 he has also organised two festivals, toured with Trio Apoplectic, The Splinter Orchestra, The Vampires and Peter Farrar, recorded an album in Norway, collaborated with Kris Wanders, Dave Brown and Lucas Simonis (Netherlands) and performed with American creative music pioneer Wadada Leo Smith.
